(3 1/2 stars) I liked it. Did take me a couple of attempts to read it, had some trouble getting through the first 1/3 of the book. Once got into it the rest of the book flew. Will read the next

Sci-fi genres are a hit-or-miss for me. I was skeptical when I saw the synopsis but a part of me was also very curious to see what this book is about. I love detective, crime-solving stories! If I am to describe Mindfire in a few words, it has a cyberpunk, Stranger Things-ish plot. And I loved it! My most favorite part of this book was the setting. It took place sometime in the future, perhaps around 3-4 generations into the future, maybe a bit more. Think, our technology right now, but super enhanced and/or improved! What I loved about how L.D. Houghton incorporated these things, they were not exaggerated. Yes, there are driverless cars, movies/shows projected on walls, wireless stun-guns, cash being almost obsolete, but he did not make them over-the-top. I was still able to picture the story being realistic. And some of those details are actually something I would like in the future. Not that I would be alive to see it, lol!

The ending was great! I was actually very content in the cliffhanger. Houghton dropped some clues for the readers to come up with various theories, but also did not give too much away. He revealed some answers to my questions but also added some twists. By the end of the book, I already wanted to read Book 2. I am very curious to find out what happened to the characters, and how the plot thickens. This book is worth a read!

Now I'm feeling bas for all the books I've given 5 stars because this one is much better than some of them!
I like how the author describes everything what’s happening now and then he tells us the story behind it which happened many years ago. The characters are well developed but not predictable. The book is easy to read and I really hope there will be a sequel!

I was concerned when I first started to read this novel. The Prologue opened with a run-on sentence and there were many uses of "as", but a few chapters in the errors seemed to smooth out. I did get lost with the story's timeline moving backward and then forward depending on the chapter. The reader does need to pay attention to those chapter headings to know what is going on.

It was a good action-packed story. Plenty of twists and turns. It is obvious that the author put a lot of thought into the plot and needed to map out all of the little threads that he had going on. Given the story's subject matter, I expected the violence, but I'm not a big fan of profanity and there was a fair amount in this book. It didn't stop me from enjoying the story. I can apply a filter and ignore it.

The novel is an easy read. Finished this one in two days.

This book should really be divided into two separate books. The first half took me a majority of the story to really figure out how everything made sense and then it stops with no resolution. The story starts back up 20 years or more later and the original main character finally returns to the story. While the story is original, it is a colony of people on a new planet with limited technology and the villages have regressed to a midevil society who do not remember coming to this planet or what technology even is, it takes forever to piece all of the puzzle pieces together to figure this out. Once the first half of the story is finished, you realize the planet is revolting against the people for no apparent reason and the "animals" and plants are killing everything.

I thank the author for providing me a review copy.
I wanted to like this book. It sounded so promising, yet it really fell flat for me.
This book has a lot going for it, yet it somehow doesn't deliver on any real front, possibly because it tries to do so on too many of them.

The story starts out rather straightforward, with our protagonist being betrayed by his traditional village family. Then we are introduced to a very sci-fi element that never really meshes with the existing story line and then the direction seemingly changes ever few pages into a new and unexpected way with none of the story strands being properly wrapped up.

I thought the writing style to be rather hard to get into as well, although it got better roughly a third through, yet that is where the story really starts to loose its focus.

This story tries to combine so many things into one book, including a very odd Japanese influence that is never really explained, and remains oddly superficial.

In short, this book tried to do too many things well, and by doing so failed to deliver on any of them.
