Michael Horovitz was a British poet, editor, visual artist, and translator, born in Frankfort, Germany on April 4, 1935. His family moved to Britain in 1937. He read English at Brasenose College, Oxford 1954 to 1960. He was a leading figure in Beat Poetry in the UK. While at Oxford he co-founded, mostra altro along with Anna Lovell and David Sladen, the periodical New Departures which he edited for 50 years. He published several authors who are well-known today, such as William S. Burroughs and Samuel Beckett. He also coordinated poetry events such as Live New Departures, Jazz Poetry Super Jams, and Poetry Olympics. He stood for Oxford Professor of Poetry in 2010 but was unsuccessful. He wrote twelve books of poetry, but also worked as an editor, translator, and artist. His work included Declaration (1963), Children of Albion (1969) as editor, The Wolverton Wanderer: an epic of Britannia, in twelve books (1979), Growing Up: Selected Poems and Pictures, 1951-79 (1979), Grandchildren of Albion (1992) as editor, and A New Waste Land: Timeship Earth at Nillennium (2007).
