Originally distributed to personnel in China in the days after Mao's rise to power, the book was meant to be a guide to help people where no Western style medicine was available. The book relies on the traditional oriental technique of Acupuncture, the placement of needles in the skin at various points in the body, and the related techniques of Moxibustion, a heat therapy utilizing similar points, and Cupping, the use of suction on the body.

While these techniques are not endorsed by the Western medical community, these treatments have been used for many years in the Orient. Over the years, Western medicine has periodically re-evaluated the effectiveness of these technique and numerous studies have been conducted to determine how acupuncture works.

Keeping the book's origins in mind, the material is presented in a very dry, no nonsense style. The medical illustrations are sparse, but useful. The "Handbook" is NOT a do it yourself guide to Acupuncture, but is an interesting volume about this unusual method of healing that is still widely used.
