A little meta, beautifully illustrated, and very silly.

I had hoped this book would work better in storytime than it did.....=( It's an awesome alphabet book and in a small audience, I could see it going off really well. But I found the kids were more obsessed with the bear than anything else.

Maggie the elephant gets bullied because of her body size and that she is clumsy. Her best friend Paula the beaver, doesn't play with her because of a mean dog named Veronica she should play with her instead. But once Veronica teases Paula, Maggie comes to stand up for her. A wonderful book that teaches about bullying and how to stand up to it.

This is a FANTASTIC book about friendship. Rupert the Rhinoceros loves reading the dictionary and listens to classical music. He doesn't have any friends, but that doesn't seem to bother him. One day, Levi the Tickbird shows up and befriends Rupert. Levi is goofy, funny, zany, and a little wild and crazy for Rupert's tastes. Rupert tries to get rid of him to no avail. One day when he's had enough of Levi's goofy antics, Rupert tells Levi that he wants to be alone. Levi is so sad and he leaves. Without Levi around, Rupert finds that life is a little boring, he doesn't have anyone to eat the ticks off his back so he's itchy and now he doesn't have ANY friends. He apologizes to Levi and they become the best of friends despite their differences. The illustrations are beautiful. They deepen the reader's understanding of the characters' feelings and personalities. In addition to being a wonderful book about friendship, the author brings in the scientific concept of symbiosis by showing how the two characters of different species gain mutual benefit by their close association. Wonderfully done!

Brief text - often just one or two words.
A little silly, as bear ends up with a knitted hat on his head.
Nicely done!

I find that this would be a good and simpke story about sharing and looking at things from a different perspective for children.

Jane is a little dog who travels in the circus, but she doesn't feel like she's as special as her mother, father, siblings, or any of the other circus performers. But in the end she realizes that she's great at one thing: being Jane. And that's good enough. I love the message in this story that you shouldn't compare yourself to others.

Rupert was a quiet rhinoceros with refined tastes. He liked reading dictionaries, listening to Beethoven and eating cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off. Levi was a loud tickbird with a taste for corny jokes and a penchant for making armpit farts. When Levi lands on Rupert and won't be dislodged, the rhino is at first embarrassed and upset. But when he finally tells Levi to take a hike, the little bird's observation that he thought Rupert needed a friend has the rhino reconsidering...

Author/illustrator Hannah E. Harrison uses the classic "odd couple who become friends" story to explore the idea of symbiosis in Friends Stick Together. She includes two definitions of the word symbiosis, at the beginning and the end of her tale, and the subtle differences between the two definitions mirror the changes that occur in the story, as Rupert realizes he really does want a friend. I enjoyed Harrison's entertaining narrative, and appreciated the fact that she has Levi use some big words at the end, as this will emphasize to young children that having a more brash personality, or enjoying more "low-brow" things, is not tied in any way to a lack of intelligence (a classic classist idea, that is often still quite prevalent). I also appreciated the illustrations, which are cute, and often quite humorous. Recommended to anyone looking for new picture-books about friendship, or children's stories that indirectly explore the idea of symbiosis.

There is nothing better than a picture book that has the most lovable adorable characters coupled with an important lesson that kids will relate to.
This author/illustrator has a winning combination. I need to own all of her books. They are fabulous!

Jane's family were performers in the circus. Her whole family all had talents except for her. She tried all kinds of tricks and talents but she was just ordinary and although it made her sad, she was still Jane and that was enough for her family and her owner to love her. This book is about acceptance. She didn't need to compare herself to others because although Jane didn't have any talents or tricks to perform in the circus like her family, she was a good dog and loved. This book is great to teach a life lesson not to compare yourself to others and also about looking past someone's imperfections and loving and accepting them anyways.

A good straightforward story about standing up for friends when being teased or bullied. Also, wonderful display of how in friendship there are mistakes and forgiveness without saying that's what is going on.

Bernice is so angry because everyone is getting all of the good stuff at the party except her. She misses out on the candy, the drink she gets is warm, and she doesn't get the kind of cake she wants. She gets so angry that she steals all the balloons, which end up carrying her away. Looking from above, Bernice realizes that her problems are so small and unimportant. When she decides to be happy, she has a great time and everyone else does too.

Extraordinary Jane by Hannah Harrison

Age: 2-4years

Genre: Circus animals

Jane is an ordinary dog living at an extraordinary circus. While she isn’t strong, brave or graceful like the rest of her family, Jane is wonderful and loved in her own, special way.

This is a wonderful picture book. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant. The text is simple enough for a new reader, but at the same time, filled with some challenged and fun vocabulary. Pizzazz is always a fun word to say in my book. I also love the play on the word “extraordinary” Jane is really just extra ordinary. This book is a wonderful, and whimsical reminder to our children that they don’t have to be the fastest or smartest in order to be loved and appreciated. It sends a very strong “be yourself” message, which is always important for young people to hear.
