- Aase Hansen was born in Frederiksvaerk, the daughter of a merchant. She was educated at Frederiksborg prior to attending the University of Copenhagen, where she earned degrees in English and German. She became a teacher at the Alborg Cathedral School, and began to write, eventually giving up teaching to be a full-time writer and translator. She never married. Her novels included Ebba Berings Studenterdid (The Academic Career of Ebba Bering, 1929) and Et Par Huse om en Station (A Few Houses by a Station, 1930). She wrote the volumes of memoirs Klip at et Billedark (Clippings from a Picture Sheet, 1973) and Fra den gronne Provins (From the Green Province, 1952) which were written in essay form. Her last work was I Forvitringens Aar (In Years of Decline, 1977). A key theme in her work was the loss of innocence, which was linked to the period of early youth and to the years before World War I, and her books are known for their melancholy tone.
