Semiology by Pierre Guilraud is about as precise an introduction to semiotics as one could ask for. Pierre breakdowns the various codifications with brevity and clarity. He covers function, form and substance. Writes about social codes and aesthetic codes. All throughout with the signifier, signified and emitter as decisive factors. If you have an interest in mythologies and media, and would like a really scrupulous run down of its intertextual meanings, then this would most certainly be a worthwhile book to begin with. It's an index more than a study, but not over-simplified or written for those too lazy to chase up further study based on what Pierre has referenced.
