There‘s a very good reason why you should let sleeping dogs lie, as 9-year-old Johanna discovers. Growing up a good Catholic girl in the provincial Austrian town of Wels in the late 1960s, she learns from her grandmother her family‘s secret: they are Jewish. Life now starts to change, uncomfortably so: the caretaker bullies her, the religion teacher ignores her and her traumatised mother stops talking to people. Both older women know exactly who were the very worst Nazis back then. After the war they reinvented themselves as devout Catholics. Johanna, however, is determined not to hide, she wants to be proud of her heritage and now becomes Hanna. But the „sleeping dogs“ are awake, they are starting to bark and they still have their teeth. Der Film beginnt laut einer Einblendung an einem Morgen im Jänner 1945. Der Zuseher wird auf die wahren Begebenheiten hingewiesen, auf denen der Film basiert. Die ersten Bilder zeigen Impressionen des KZ Mauthausen, danach folgt der Schnitt ins Innere von Baracke 20 – dem „Todesblock“. Hier schlafen auf dem Boden etwa 500 russische Offiziere, die sich geweigert haben, nach ihrer Gefangennahme für Deutschland zu kämpfen, als der Weckruf erfolgt. Schon lange nur mehr auf niedrigste Lebensmittelrationen gesetzt, erwachen viele nur mühselig, manche gar nicht mehr. (fonte: Wikipedia)

La storia della fuga dei prigionieri di guerra sovietici dalla tremenda Baracca K di Mauthausen nel 1944 ...

La storia è molto originale ma il libro non è scritto benissimo. A volte i dialoghi sono da telefilm e anche i personaggi non sono ben descritti e sono piuttosto piatti. Tutto considerato si fa leggere.
