A pretty little board book with colorful pictures and few words for a very young child. Reading the reviews, I realized the book is as much about means of transportation as it is about places in Israel. A young boy travels to Ben Gurion airport, the hills of Jerusalem, the wall of the Old City, a kibbutz, Eilat, the desert, Masada, Beersheva, and the Dead Sea by plane, in a tour bus, on foot, in a tractor, in a glass-bottomed boat, in a jeep, in cable car, on a camel, and by floating respectively. There is very little detail in the pictures and no almost no information in the text, no real interaction with people, and nothing obviously Jewish about the book (although the locations have a Jewish connection), even though it is published by Kar-Ben and is a PJ Library book. But it ends with an invitation to visit what might well be a charming country; it's a sweet book.½

The word "Pascha" comes from the Hebrew word "Pesach," meaning "Passover." In the understanding of Orthodox Christians, the Jewish ritual of Passover is a prophetic foreshadowing of the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Christ and of our Redemption through His Body and Blood.

Like the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar, which begins each year on September 1, the Jewish liturgical calendar begins on Rosh HaShanah, which usually falls in September based on the Jewish lunar calendar.

This old favorite gives children an illustrated introduction to Yom Kippur and makes the concepts of forgiveness, repentance, and starting over easy to grasp. The words are complemented by music to accompany holiday songs.

Summary: This board book illustrates young children to Israel by the ways that people transport into Israel through the country. They are introduced to the main visiting points of the country with beautiful illustrations.

Personal connection: As part of my inquiry project, this book will show children exploring Israel. I can relate to this personally because I have wanted to go for some time now, and this just solidified my need to go.

Class use: Have students draw their favorite monument, and explain why they like it to the class or in small groups.

I considered using this for a seder with a 1 1/3-year-old, but it's too different from most Haggadot for me---Moses keeps getting mentioned! And the four questions come late. There are lots of pictures to color before the holiday and the book looks inviting.½

For parents that enjoy teaching their children about the world, this lovely little board book teaches toddlers and younger children about Israel. With friendly illustrations on each page, illustrator Cheryl Nathan brings the richness and variety of Israel to young readers. The words are simple and the visit easy for young readers. A simple book that is a nice introduction for youngsters before visiting Israel.

Simple story for a young child. Format for each page is: "Is it ....? No, that's ...." Some, but not all, of the objects found as a young girl and her cat search for the afikomen are ritual objects used at a Seder. So it is educational. Pictures are colorful and simple and I found the book satisfying.½

NO OF PAGES: 24 SUB CAT I: Children's Resources SUB CAT II: Feasts/Festivals SUB CAT III: DESCRIPTION: Shavuot is a holiday with little pageantry. It is a harvest festival, but we do not build sukkot. It is a celebration of Torah, but we do not march with the Torah around the synagogue. There are no gifts, no dreidel games, no costume parades, no shofar-blowing. Even in the hierarchy of Jewish delicacies, blintzes take a back seat to latkes and hamantaschen. Therefore, in addition to discussing the traditional themes of harvest and history, we have highlighted many folk customs that are being reintroduced to enrich Shavuot observance at home and in the synagogue. Among these are the gathering of first fruits; the all-night study session; presenting a new Torah scroll to the congregation; and celebrating not only the confirmation or graduation of religious school students, but the beginning of their learning as well.NOTES: Donated from Shabbat school materials no longer used. This board book uses colorful collage art to present the youngest readers with the experience of visiting Israel, from plane ride to kibbutz to camel ride. Part of the PJ Library series of "Jewish Bedtime Stories & Songs for Families", this book provides an introduction to real world attractions of Israel, including the market of Beersheva and the Old City, shown through the experiences of a backpacked young boy.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Soft watercolors and a simple text introduce Jewish liturgy and tradition. These prayers honor daily experiences, holidays, and even death. Brief explanations precede each Hebrew prayer, followed by a phonetic transliteration (with an explanatory guide) and an English phrase usually thanking God for his blessings. Pastel illustrations, often used as a border, focus attention on the varying sizes of text. Containing more blessings and gentler pictures than Michelle Edwards's Blessed Are You (Lothrop, 1993), this is an excellent choice for family sharing and to balance religious collections.
