A Ray of Hope is a heartwarming short story about a friendship that develops on a farm between an autistic child and a blind goat. The author highlights their mutual understanding of having disabilities and how the people who seem the least capable can achieve great things if they are given a chance.

I thought this book was a really sweet story. I loved the message as well: to not give up and there is always a ray of hope! The writing was solid but I thought the author had an issue identifying his audience. There were many comments made by some of the characters that a middle grade student wouldn't understand or connect with. I actually think this would be a great book for senior citizens, maybe something to share at a nursing home. Thank you for the free copy, I enjoyed it!

I initially had trouble getting past the names of Farmer, Worker, Wife, and Child for the human characters while all the goats had normal names like Ray, Molly, and Dixie. Once I realized this was not an error, but the way the author chose to present them I was able to settle into the story. The portion of the story with the goats is a beloved tale of their thoughts and lives, full of joy and growth. The portion of the story with the human characters seems forced and less focused.
The story itself is plainly written. The plain writing detracts from the tale, making it hard to understand whether the author is telling a tale or just reciting one he was told.
I generously gave this book 3 stars, since the actual story of Ray himself is worth the time, and on rereading I will skip the rest and only read those sections.

I received this book through the Librarything.com Early Reviewers program. It arrived quickly - before the end of the month! The book is set in Georgia in the USA. It tells the story of a goat who was born blind and was befriended by the farmer's daughter, who is autistic. It's a sweet story, but not particularly well written. I felt like it kept jumping between styles, and it ends abruptly.
