- Dr Matthew Goodwin is Associate Professor of Politics, and Associate Fellow at Chatham House. His main areas of research are British and European politics, Euroscepticism, radical and extreme movements and public attitudes toward immigration and minority groups. Matthew received his BA (First Class) in Politics and Contemporary History in 2003, at the University of Salford, his Master of Arts in Political Science in 2004, at the University of Western Ontario, and his PhD in 2007, at the University of Bath.

But the second one starts thinking that national populist voters are a basket of deplorables, well, we know what happens. For that reason alone this is well worth a read, because it lays out, systematically and straightforwardly, a sociological explanation for the rejection of liberalism and the embrace of nationalism and xenophobia.
