It's important to note that this book was published in 1989. The art style is older, utilizing many strokes to make texture. This is a collection of short folktales that are based in America that are meant to be either funny or moral based. There are some concerning symbolism in the material as well as come concerning words. For example, the word "coon" is used. "Coon" at one point in time was used as a derogatory term for Black people. In the context of the story, the "coon" is a raccoon which eludes Davy Crocket, a notable white character. The symbolism here to some may be considered pejorative. In addition, there is another story in which a mule is speaking. In one point in time, a "mule" was slang for a person who is smuggling illicit substances. Overall, the title provides a great way to showcase American Folklore and Songs.

In this picture storybook, the Scholastic Readability Level is 1st grade. This story gives an overglorified view of the Thanksgiving holiday, in my opinion. It shows a happy family coming together to eat an abundance of food in a happy, safe environment, which is not the case for everyone. It may be hard for students to hear about this glorious family celebration when their own Thanksgivings may go without an abundant meal or a happy family to share it with. Not everyone is as fortunate, so to generalize the experience as a typical Thanksgiving may cause individuals to feel sad. There isn't much of a teaching purpose found within the book either, so I doubt I would use it for teaching purposes.

Mama's Perfect Present was a funny read, while also showing a serious problem that a sister and brother run into. They are on the hunt for a perfect present for their mom, and of course they take their dog Zaza with them. In every store they go into, Zaza ruins everything. They go get her a dress? Ruined. A songbird? Ruined. Flowers? Ruined. And the list goes on. The story ends with the kids deciding to just do a painting for their mom and they paint her with everything they were going to buy her. This story shows a valuable lesson of determination. The kids could have easily given up after the first bad encounter, but they kept trying and it really paid of. That teaches kids to never give up, even when they think everything is going wrong!

This is a silly story of things that you should not do at the kitchen table when eating. This story would be a good book when teaching manners.

This is a great story for young readers. Although it is all in English, the illustrations provide French vocabulary that can be picked out and translated. I think the story also provides a great moral that not all presents have to be expensive or even bought.

39 months - This is a great manners book if you read it and then translate it into a language your child will understand which is exactly what I did. While reading this O informed us "You can talk with your mouth full if you sign!". Yup, my child, always looking for the loophole. She's been signing since she was 5 months and probably quite often with her mouthful. Haha.

This is a realistic fiction book. This book is about a boy named Jack who takes his mom to the park to find the most perfect spot for a picnic. Everywhere they decide to settle down and have their picnic, they are disturbed! A flock of bird, a heard of horses, even rain destroys their day. Jack is upset and mad that the park does not have the most perfect spot for a picnic. They then rush home in the rain and find that the most perfect picnic spot was in their home, where they could be alone with each other.

In this Fairytale, the emperor of the town loved clothing. He was always looking for new designers and clothes to wear. One day, two swindlers came and told him that they can make him the best clothes money can buy, but the only people that can see them are the wise and the people that are fit for their job. So the emperor paid them a lot of money, and they went off to work on this invisible clothing. The emperor sent two of his ministers to see how it looked. Neither of them could actually see the clothes, but they did not want to appear unfit for their jobs, so they both lied and said it looked ravishing. So when the emperor finally saw no sorts of clothes, he to said nothing about it. So he did his processional in no clothing, and everyone went along with it. That is, until the little dinosaur asked everyone why he wasn't wearing any clothes. Everyone new this to be true, even the emperor, but he said the processional must go on, so it did.

I like this book because even though there aren't many words, the illustrations do an excellent job telling the story. The illustrations enhances the story and the mood of the story is based on its illustrations. Even though the cover makes the book sound and look scary, the illustrations do a good job make the story funny and blissful. When the son and mother are taken away from their home, the baby monster cries out for his "MOTHER" when the other monsters take them (son and mother) from him (the baby monster). When the mother monster comes to their rescue, she says "I want you to take them right back where you found them...and don't ever touch them again". This language use makes the story seem funny instead of scary. The plot is organized well and it makes the reader want to see the next page. The big idea of this story is to let children know that even monsters have mothers and not all monsters are cruel and evil. This book was made for children who are afraid of the dark. When it is time for bed, children get scared by little creeks and noises but this book reassures the children that even if there are monsters, they will not hurt you because the "mother" will not let them.

This is a cute book with a collection of different poems and carols about the holidays. I think this would be good around holiday time as a read-aloud and to teach the children different poem forms and simple songs.

A young Brooklyn boy decides to take his mother on a picnic in Prospect Park, having discovered the "perfect spot." But, as is so often the case, nothing goes quite as planned, and one disaster after another force the boy and his mother to keep moving on. With a flock of wild ducks, five galloping riders on horseback, and some unlooked-for rain, it looks like the picnic is off! Or is it...?

A charming story that emphasizes the virtue of accepting unexpected difficulties with aplomb, and "making lemonade from lemons," Diane Goode's The Most Perfect Spot will entertain any young reader who has set out to do something, only to find that the best-laid plans can go awry. I liked the fact that something good comes from disaster, and appreciated the humorous illustrations, which depicted an early twentieth-century New York (1930s, perhaps?). All in all, a delightful book!
