Inclusive pronouns are learned alongside the alphabet in this joyously illustrated take on the classic ABC book.

They, She, He easy as ABC shows that including everyone is all part of the dance. It’s easy. It’s fundamental. As the dance begins the kids proclaim, “No one left out and everyone free,” in a sing-song rhyme about inclusion. This sets the stage for readers to meet 26 kids showing us their dance moves.

“Ari loves to arabesque. They hold their pose with ease.
Brody is a break dancer. Brody loves to freeze.”

Fast-paced rhyming keeps the flow of text upbeat and rhythmic, and naturally models how to use a wide range of pronouns. There’s no room for stereotypes on THIS dance floor with spirited imagery that keeps names, clothes, hair and behavior fresh and diverse. The combination creates a playful and effortless practice to expand ideas about gender while learning the alphabet and makes being inclusive as easy as A-B-C.

This book continues the work started in They She He Me: Free to Be!, also by Maya & Matthew, and what School Library Journal called “a gorgeous and much-needed picture book about pronouns and gender fluidity.” Both books provide a way to build on gender inclusive practices, and help interrupt the formalization of gender stereotypes and assumptions.

There’s not very much to this book. Many of the pages are just the same pronoun over and over again. They use the illustrations to show that that pronoun belonging to many different people. Towards the back, there’s a little bit about playing with pronouns and how only you know what your true pronoun is. There’s even a part with information for grown-ups. This book is a bit hard to understand and while I did like it, I’m not sure if it would help adults in the explanation of different pronouns, but I think kids would see it and enjoy it.

Backmatter includes several pages explaining pronouns, their use, how to claim a pronoun and play around with them. Further backmatter is aimed at parents and adults, with advice on developing comfort with pronoun use and creating change by modeling gender neutral language.

diverse picture book (bilingual English/Spanish, Pura Belpre Honor, colors / preschool ages 3-6)
* Book prominently features diverse characters: the main character is a young Latina girl living in a desert/arid climate (modeled after the author/illustrator Maya Gonzalez who grew up in the Mojave desert area).
* Book would work well for a preschool storytime. Vibrant story and illustrations, and identifiable colors make this a great choice for ages 3 and up (or younger kids if reading one-on-one).
* Book works well with the "colors" theme.

The illustrations are geared towards a young audience but there is a lot of text which is at a higher level.

This book talked about gender in three different layers: the body, the inside, & the pronouns. It explains what each of these layers of the circle mean and is a great tool for explaining why some people don’t abide by their assigned gender.

This book goes over different identities. It highlights that there is no limit to what any identity can look like.

This book is about growing up and discovering who you are. The main character was assigned female at birth however, they do not identify as such. They are growing into exactly who they need to be.

Gonzalez, M. (2013). My Colors, My World. New York: Children's Book Press.
This story about a little girl who lives in the Mojave Desert where she doesn’t see much color is great for preschool students to learn about the Mojave Desert, including where it is and things you would find in a desert. The little girl with the help of a bird is able to find colors in the things around her that she had overlooked. This teaches a great lesson of looking at the little things in life that make the big picture. I think it would help students to look a little more at the small details in things around them to form the big picture.

This was a bilingual book, the author used English and Spanish to write this book. I️ really enjoyed it and would love to incorporate it at my placement, as most of my kiddos also speak Spanish at home.

So many different looking people and so many pronouns. It looks like a girl but is a he. It looks like a boy but is a she. This book shows that we can be exactly who we are. Our pronouns do not have to define us, we define ourselves. The art does a terrific job of showing this.½
