I really loved this read. It was fun take on the old story with updated twist. I loved how the romance was handled in this book and how it developed. I also really enjoyed seeing the introduction of several new members to the club!! I also loved the dymanics of the club as well. I am so excited to keep on going in this series.

I really loved how this graphic novel was structured and how it focused on only two girls of the baby-sitters club and used letters throughout the novel. I also loved how this book focused on stacy and maryann relationship. I also really liked how this book was set in the summer and really loved reading it. I also still am really loving the art style in this read and love how this book dealt with friendship drama and also babysitting drama.

I do not care for Galligan's drawing style (which reminds me of Archie comics) after having enjoyed Telegmeirer's interpretations for the first 4 books. I'm probably more bothered by this than I should be.

Representation: Asian main characters
Trigger warnings: N/A?
Score: Six points out of ten.

Looks like a good book!
Update: I actually enjoyed this novel. The main character was actually really complex for he had relatable struggles and even character development. He had flaws like when he stubbornly shouted at people when he feels frustrated and average grades but he was still enjoyable to read. I liked the dynamic between Cory and Sunna since they argued at first but eventually got along once he realised that she was good at the yo-yo. Sunna was relatable as well as she felt that her brother was stealing the spotlight most of the time.

I can understand that the dance leader wants to push everyone harder but that made the group very annoyed, which I didn't like but eventually that was resolved. Also Cory's parents were proud of him once for having no friends only to get better grades? Maybe it's a sacrifice he has to make but he didn't feel grateful for that since he didn't want to be alone forever but that was resolved as well. If you want a novel with character development this is the book for you.

I think this is a really cute book that middle schoolers will enjoy. That said, I felt like some of the plot lines were weird/shallow/inconsistent -- there was a lot of interpersonal drama that felt a little overblown. It's also a lot of story and a bunch of it is non-verbal -- which, hey, cool, but also it left me wanting more -- more character and plot development, most believable reasons for drama, just more to the story and more resolutions onscreen instead of away.

I saw the reviews from various Muslim folx pointing out inconsistencies with Islamic culture -- that's a big flag for me as I am a non-Muslim person who recommends books to Muslim children, and I'd rather not screw that up by handing them a story line that could potentially cause them strife. I agree with the reviewers that the author has done a wonderful job of inclusion but needed sensitivity readers. I look forward to more from this creator in the future and I hope that message is supported by their publishers.

Recommended Ages: Gr.

Plot Summary: The main character (a boy) is on the dance crew and they are working really hard to win the competition. It becomes a little difficult for the boy and he often does his own dance moves. Meanwhile, the boy's parents are upset about his grades. After he makes a tutor storm out of the house, he is grounded which means he can't dance with his friends. At lunch one day he sees his tutor (and lab partner) doing really cool tricks on the yoyo. The tutor uses the yoyo as motivation to help him learn and his grades improve. Now he wants to participate in a yoyo contest, and he wants his tutor and now friend to do it too. Will he find a way to practice with the dance crew again? Will he find a way to get his tutor/friend to forgive him for signing her up for the yoyo contest without asking her first?

Setting:

Characters:

Recurring Themes: friendship, yoyo, dancing, schoolwork, tutoring, focus, devotion, family

Controversial Issues: none

Personal Thoughts: Even though the characters are in 8th grade, this book is appropriate for elementary. It's a wholesome story about the changes in friendship that happen naturally. I appreciate that they don't win the yoyo contest.

My girls read the BSC books and watched the show, but this was my first one to read. I can see why they liked them. I really appreciate the diversity in this book and that Mary Anne is being raised by a single parent. This was not reflected in the 1988 book, at least not np y what I see on the cover.

In this one the BSC is starting 8th grade. Mary Anne marks the momentous occasion by falling for a guy who's just moved to Stonybrook.. The club becomes overwhelmed with too many jobs so they look to take on new members. This was not a hasty decision on the part of the club. They consider the two newcomers to their school, a boy named Logan and and a girl named Jessie.

Time moves on and Logan invites hy Mary Anne to the Remember September Dance. Mary Anne's dad gives her permission to go, with strict instructions and even gives her his credit card to buy a new outfit. The whole club gives shopping with her and a cute skirt is purchased. At the dance itself, Mary Anne actually manages to have a good time until her shoe flies off and nearly hits the vice principal in the head. She's mortified, and goes stomping off to the bleachers until the dance is over. Logan is Super Boyfriend and makes it all good for her and the relationship continues.

Stacey pushes Mary Anne to invite logan to a party she's having, which is going to involve a surprise cake in honor of Mary Anne's birthday. When the cake is brought out and Mary Anne finds herself the center of attention, she leaves the party runs home. I thought that a strange reaction.

The next day, over breakfast with her dad, Mary Anne asks him for a cat for her birthday. He agrees, and she calls Logan to ask him to come to the shelter with her later that day to help pick it out. They talk about the party, and Logan is completely understanding. Of course, super boyfriend strikes again. . He meets dad and Mary Anne at the shelter, and she adopts the other love of her life, Tigger. Wow, unique name.

A few days later, the BSC is meeting when a job comes in that none of them can take. It's for a family with four boys, and the girls know that Logan would be perfect for the job. They don't want to give the job to a non-club member, so Mary Anne comes up with the whole associate member idea. Logan accepts, and all is right with the world.

Thus s fun to read but I find it to be more of fantasy story because this is not how middle school relationships happen in reality.

To me the characters seemed younger than eighth grade but Stacy McGill looks like an adult. I think since the book was first published in the 80’s, children have changed in many ways. They are more aware and are faced with more mature situations. I think social media, cell phones, iPads and Netflix have made our children less innocent when I compare life today to my children growing up in the 80’s and 90’s.

I don’t see. Middle school readers clambering for this outdated series, but it was fun to read.

Gale Galligan wraps up her tour of duty on the Baby-Sitters Club graphic novel adaptations just as she is hitting her stride. Shy Mary Anne gets all excited and anxious as new boy in school Logan Bruno starts paying attention to her. A warm and fuzzy little story about dating in eighth grade.

The girls in the Baby-Sitters Club start eighth grade and meet new students who recently moved into town and are interested in becoming babysitters -- Jessi from New Jersey and Logan from Kentucky. And Logan looks just like Mary Anne's celebrity crush so she's immediately swooning over him!

This is another gem in the new graphic novel adaptations of the Baby-Sitters Club series. The title gives away the fact that Mary Anne's feelings are reciprocated so there's no real tension there. This is good in a way; especially when the world is particularly overwhelming or dismal seeming, it's nice to retreat into something where the problems are manageable and seem that way from the outset. This is also a nice change of pace compared to all the "problem" novels out there for the target audience of middle graders. Yes, it is important that there are books that cover deep topics like abuse, bullying, parental divorce, racism, etc. But sometimes it's also nice to have books that just focus on more mundane problems of finding a pretty dress for a dance and negotiating with a parent for a pet.

Gale Galligan's illustrations are lovely; they are in line with the imagery with which Raina Telgemeier started the graphic novel series but have a little bit of Galligan's own style. For instance, I find Galligan's facial expressions far more emotive. Galligan also makes an effort to have a more diverse cast of characters. The two new characters are both of color; also the background of scenes with a dance, a party, and school activities have tweens wearing hijabs, using wheelchairs, and just generally being of different races/ethnicities. One odd thing is Galligan depicts an old rotary phone and tube TV in Mary Anne's house, but the fashion choices are modern as is the placement of laptops in certain scenes.

Over a few days, I read all seven of the available Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels. As a huge fan of the novels when I was a kid, I was nervous to see these adaptations. Would they retain the same charm?

The nostalgia was strong. It was such a delight to revisit Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Mallory. Jessi isn't back yet, and I hope she makes an appearance with the next installment.

I loved reading about some of the old client families and the drama that went along with them.

The illustrations captured the characters, and while the GN series has two illustrators and different styles, I think as a series it feels cohesive.

To me, part of the appeal of the series is characters kids can relate to and situations they might encounter. My 5th grade boy and 3rd grade girl have devoured the graphic novels and really enjoyed them, and they're excited that I've purchased some of the original novels (I don't have my old books anymore, boo!). I'm glad I read these graphic novels -- they were so much fun.

The babysitters’ club is a graphic novel that focuses on an upcoming wedding and 2 families that combined together. Kristy gets to be a bridesmaid in her mom’s wedding which is so exciting. Kristy's mother has had to move up her wedding date, so that there is now only a few weeks left to plan. Which means family and friends are coming early to help prep for the perfect day. Kristy and the babysitters club came up with the idea to babysit the children that came down with all the relatives. The girls display responsibilities, friendship, and teamwork. This shows readers that having a healthy and positive set of friends can really bring out ideas and creativity. I rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

A super sweet story almost like drinking Pepsi after eating cookies. I could see where the story was heading from the get-go, but, thankfully, it managed to happen without the all-embarrassing person 1 having to explain to person 2 a) they are already in a relationship b) they're too old for them c) they were just being kind, and person 2 misinterpreted them scene. Yes, let's have Stacey keep as much dignity as she can.

[rating from personal enjoyment!]

I love reading these series, I think this book is great for girls coming of age. Even though there is romance I think has an innocent way of telling young girls what to expect in teenage life. It shows them examples being nice, friendship and romance.

A so-so story about friendship and summer crushes during a working vacation to the Jersey Shore for two of the babysitters. Mostly, the postcards that served as chapter breaks knocked me out of the story as I thought about how a true adaptation of this story to the modern day would include cell phones and that would radically change large parts of the story as Stacey completely ignored Mary Anne in favor of constantly texting Claudia for advice and affirmation. What happened here was fine, but not interesting enough to keep my mind from wandering. It'll probably go over better with its intended audience.

Stacey and Mary Anne are invited along on the Pike family's beach vacation to help babysit their many children. But a cute lifeguard catches Stacey's eye and she thinks she is in love; meanwhile, Mary Anne feels frustrated that she is watching the children all alone as Stacey flirts.

This was another solid addition to the graphic novels based on the prose series. The girls once again show a number of positive behaviors, including friendship, responsibility, and generosity. Whenever one of them makes a mistake (in this case, Stacey's behavior mooning after boys and ignoring her charges), they admit it and work to rectify it.

Some things from this title show the age of the original books -- for instance, the girls stay in touch over the summer by sending postcards, not texting -- but otherwise it holds up fairly well. I am personally a little surprised by how much freedom is given to the girls to wander the boardwalk alone, to go on dates with boys they only met that week, etc., but perhaps that's just me.

The illustrations are well done, conveying a lot of energy and emotions. I loved the scenic views shown on the postcards, even if the device was a little bit out of date.
