A teeny tiny woman goes out and finds a bone and brings it home and puts it in her cupboard. During the night, she hears a voice demanding the bone be returned. She tells the voice to take it back!

I love Galdone's illustrations, but the text of his versions of classic stories is mediocre.

Galdone's bright illustrations capture well the emotional tide of the story. However, he ends of each verse of the rhyme in odd ways, without finishing the meter. This makes for clunky reading aloud, as the sing-sing rhythm repeatedly ends abruptly and then restarts.

The gravedigger is late coming home. His wife, sitting by the fireside with her old black cat Tom, becomes concerned. Then suddenly the Gravedigger burst through the door and anxiously demands, “Who’s Tom Tildrum?” Then he babbles about how he’s witnessed a funeral procession of cats loudly yowling “Miaow,” and carrying a coffin entered the graveyard carrying upon their shoulders a coffin with a crown atop it. The lead cat walks up to the Gravedigger on his hind legs, looks him in the eye and announces, “Tell Tom Tildrum that Tim Toldrum’s dead.”

While the old man is telling this fantastic tale to his wife, he’s aware that her cat Tom is staring at him, just like the cat in the graveyard did. And as they both stare at their housecat something uncanny happens.

"Tom was swelling and Tom was staring and at last Tom shrieked out, 'What—old Tim dead! Then I, Tom Tildrum, am King of the Cats!'
And Old Tom rushed up the chimney and was never seen again."

While the subtitle is a bit misleading since there are no ghosts in the tale, nevertheless, Galdone by using illustration and skillful pacing from page to page in this picture book continually builds the tension resulting in a very scary retelling of this English folktale.

Henny Penny by Galdone was a book I remember as a child. Short and with a shocker ending, if any of you want to really have a laugh at a macabre dark twist kids book, then this is your book, there is another version where everything's storybook fine, if you like that type of thing too.

The classic Aesopian fable of The Tortoise and the Hare is retold by author/illustrator Paul Galdone in this picture-book from 1962. When the boastful Hare declares that he can beat anyone in a contest of speed, the calm Tortoise accepts his challenge, proving in the end that "slow and steady wins the race..."

Fable number 226 in the Perry Index of Aesopica, this particular tale is one that is as familiar to me as any, well-known and loved since childhood. This retelling from Galdone is the fifth such picture-book I have picked up——the previous four being: The Hare and the Tortoise by Caroline Castle and Peter Weevers, The Race by Caroline Repchuk, The Tortoise and the Hare by Janet Stevens, and The Hare and the Tortoise by Helen Ward——since beginning to record my reading online, but is not one I recall ever encountering, when young. Needless to say, the story needed little introduction. I found the narrative simple but engaging, and the artwork, mostly in black and white, with color accents, quite appealing. I found Galdone's animal characters very expressive, and thought their depiction was well done. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for good, solid retellings of this fable.

Convinced the sky is falling, Henny Penny and a band of gullible friends march off to tell the king, only to meet their end at the hands of a wily fox. Tongue twisting rhymes and a surprise ending.

Henny Penny by Paul Galdone
Children's story about how the hen is on her way to notify the king that the sky is falling as the acorn hit her in the head.
She tells others on the way and they join her. Even the fox wants to be a part of it but he has other ideas.
He is sly.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
