Hans Georg Hiller von Gaertringen

An interdisciplinary look at one of the men who greatly influenced our common image of Adolf Hitler in the post-war years. During the third Reich Walter Frenz was a sought after camera man, famous for his mastery of the hand-held camera and work on, amongst other, Triumph des Willens and Olympia. During the war years he was employed directly by Hitler as his personal cameraman. During these years he also shot ten thousands of colour photographies, providing a more relaxed, statesman-like apperance of Hitler than the more arranged pictures shot by the official Fuhrern-photographer Heinrich Hoffmann. These images have been very popular in documentaries and history books, often used in unreflexive ways. Which this book considers problematic, since the photographies of Frentz, in closer consideration, prove to be no less propagandistic than the other official photographers of the Nazi Party.

This book also provides a very interesting look into the actual photography work of Frentz, with many pages of often quite fascinating pictures. It is almost a must for anybody with a greater interest in this era.… (altro)
