Like many martial arts, Judo was originally not only a method of self-defence, but a system for self-development as well. The authors of this book look at the principles of Judo behind the techniques, principles that the authors feel are in danger of being forgotten as Judo is becoming increasingly dominated by sportsmen and women aiming for medals.

Written mainly with the practising Judoka in mind, Judo-the Gentle Way offers not only practical advice to be used on the mat, but also, through chapters such as the Art and Etiquette of Judo, Home Practice and Meditation, shows how the serious approach to Judo should perrmeate every aspect of the Judoka's life. The emphasis is on Judo as art rather than sport, but the authors recognize that competitions are an integral and valuable part of Judo. The book is therefore designed for both contesting Judoka and non-contestants, whether Kyu grades, Dan grades or instructors, and is illustrated thoughout with photographs and drawings.

Alan Fromm is Senior Coach at the Sobell Sports Centre, London. A 4th Dan, he studied Judo under Abe Kenshiro, 8th Dan, and Otani Masutaro, 8th Dan, and is now a professional Judo instructor. He is a past Kyu grade and Dan Grade British national champion, with experience as an international competitor. He is also1st Dan, Kendo and Goshin Jutsu.

Nicolas Soames is a journalsit, specializing in classical music, Judo and travel. He lives in St. Albans, where he also teaches Judo. He is a 1st Dan.

Judo books are usually books about technique. That's fine - it's important to learn how to do judo correctly and effectively. But it is such a pleasure to read a book that goes beyond technique and that explains the real meaning of judo. This is a simple short book that everyone doing judo should have to read before they can get a black belt. I love it.
