Breve biografia
Jonathan Fitzgibbons was born in Sheffield and studied history at Balliol College, Oxford, as both an undergraduate and a graduate student. After completing his doctorate, he was appointed stipendiary lecturer in early modern history at St Anne’s College, Oxford. His research centres upon the political, constitutional and intellectual history of seventeenth-century Britain. Besides writing a biography of Oliver Cromwell (Cromwell’s Head, 2008), he has also published widely on the uses of imagery, ceremony and political theory during the Interregnum.

He is currently working on a research project which explores the nature of early modern memory in the decades after the English Civil War. By examining the ways in which contemporaries remembered the conflict, this project will highlight the dynamic quality of early modern memory. It will demonstrate how memories of the outbreak of the Civil War were never fixed – they were re-interpreted and re-invented in response to changing political, religious and intellectual circumstances. This project will also consider the generational aspects of early modern memory; including the interaction between ‘private’ and ‘public’ memories of the Civil War, and the ways in which the conflict was remembered once it had passed out of ‘living’ memory.
