I won this book through the Goodreads First Giveaways.
The Savior’s Guardian falls into one of my favourite genres – historical fiction. It was also very fitting that I decided to pick this book up to read over the Easter weekend considering it is centred about the Biblical story of Christ.
The Savior’s Guardian is about the Captain of the Guard to a Persian Prince; Ashra. Ashra is a loyal soldier and has great hopes of being promoted to a more prestigious rank and position once the prince is crowned King. Ashra soon finds himself as an escort to the prince’s counselor, and then begins a journey of a lifetime across the Biblical Middle East from the birthplace of Christ, to the foot of the cross. A story told over 30 years as Ashra protects Jesus and ultimately learns what his life was really meant to be. As he battles the forces of evil, along with his own demons, he crumbles beneath the oath he has sworn. In the moment when all appears lost, he discovers a new beginning.
Well done to Mike Finton for this different aspect of a story we have all heard time and time again, I really enjoyed this book. The story through Ashra’s eyes; his triumphs, his failures and his insecurities, all while protecting the one he sworn to protect with his life.
I was able to be engaged from the start to the end and finished it in one sitting. I gave it 4 stars a good historical fiction about the birth of Christ and the others that were in ‘play’ at the time.
