Second in the series of ' Perfect..". Haven't read the first. So my intro to Ava and Luc and their team . Some grisly murders with for me an additional extremely brutal killing of an animal in one background of one of the killers by his father which is a tiny insight into what kind of a childhood he had and could perhaps be given the criminal and family law background if the author be a show of a strand of why he turned out the way he did. And which can lie in the background of many people who kill.
It did keep me guessing. I had no clue as to who was driving the murders. It was quite a shock but once revealed made so much sense.
The last few pages were almost unbearable for tension. A few unlikely heroes emerged and like other readers I hope they appear in the next few books. One extremely compassionate officer paid a tragic price and another of Lucs team melted very slightly toward him.
I can easily see how Ava and Luc"s dealings with each other can get old very fast.
But am interested to read more.

Geleend van de bibliotheek om weer eens een detective-je te lezen. Het is er halverwege bij gebleven. Misschien zijn dit soort boeken beter te verwerken in vakantietijd.

Helen Fields has mastered the unexpected ending. That was a messed up story, there were so many twists and I loved the alternating story lines. Now I need to go read the first 6 books in the D.I. Callanach series. Looking forward to reading more of Helen's work in the future.

This debut novel shows that Fields has a remarkable ability for writing grit lit, tartan noir, or whatever you choose to call it. This is the first in a series featuring DI Luc Callanach, a Scottish-born French detective whose mother removed him from Scotland at four years old when they moved to France. He was a one-time model, then most recently employed by Interpol. He is now a DI in Scotland's police service in Edinburgh working with another officer, DCI Ava Turner, where they are investigating a case of missing women and a second case of abandoned new born babies. The missing women crime is gripping, gruesome, somewhat reminiscent of Jussi Adler-Olsen's noir novels. It kept me up until 3am because I couldn’t put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and look forward to following the series.… (altro)
