Breve biografia
Azriel Feuerstein was born to a Jewish family in Košice, Slovakia. At age 16, during World War II, he was deported with his family to the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz and then to other camps, including Bergen-Belsen. He was the sole survivor of his family when he was liberated by the British Army in 1945.
He spent many months convalescing in hospitals in Sweden, and then was taken in by a Swedish boarding school. He emigrated to Israel, where in 1967 he served an anti-aircraft gunner in the Six-Day War. His memoir The Tumbler: A 16-Year-Old Boy’s Live Chronicle of Auschwitz, Belsen, Hanover,
Hildesheim, Wolgsberg and Wüstegiersdorf Nazi Death Camps, was based on notes he kept during the Holocaust and after.
