Wow what a change from the first book. I didn't like the hero or the heroine. I didn't like their motives. They had no believable chemistry with each other. The story was slow. The hero was stupid. There was a mistake in the timeline between this book and the first one that bugged me. There wasn't enough action.

This was a pretty good read. Pretty good world building. This was an action oriented story with a secondary romance. There was a villain who was wonderfully written as just a total nightmare. And it wasn't one of the aliens. There were good, bad and indifferent humans. Enjoyed it.

Glad I went ahead with the 3rd book after the disappointment of the 2nd one. This one again was action packed. The super nasty villain made another appearance. He's really someone you love to hate. We learn a bit more about the aliens. The hero was a well filled out character with a good back story and complete motivations. The heroine was too. She grew up alone and tough and did everything she could to survive. Both grew during the course of the book. I totally enjoyed it.

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi, aliens, and the like, but something about this book's blurb appealed to me. Well, I'm glad I took a chance and read it. CAPTIVE was an exciting (and a touch unsettling) fantasy adventure and unconventional love story in one.

Twenty-three year old Earth girl Addy is abducted by aliens and taken to their planet called Hyborea. To her shock and horror, she wakes up in a small cell with a naked stranger. The man, named Max, enlightens her about what's going on.

Humans are exotic pets to the Hyboreans, and Addy's been taken to be a breeding/sex slave. For entertainment, the Hyboreans force male humans to take part in strenuous, violent survival races. These gladiators like Max are used for stud purposes when they're not competing, which is where Addy comes in. She's his new "broodmare," and though most of Max's breeding partners have been willing, Addy is not.

Max has been a captive for 15 years, and after all the degradation and abuse, he feels more like an animal than man. However, there's something about Addy that calls to the part of him that's still human. Her strength and spirit make him long for freedom, and when she suggests escaping, he agrees. Of course, their Hyborean masters aren't keen on runaway pets, and soon the thrilling chase is on.

CAPTIVE is a strong start to Ms. Fawcett's new series, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Even though it's science fiction, the reader isn't overwhelmed with a lot of techno stuff. That's not to say that the world-building wasn't awesome, because it was! I was fascinated by the aliens and their strange planet.

The story's focus is Addy and Max's race for survival, and finding love in a hopeless and desperate situation. This story was more action/adventure than romance, which suited me fine. Considering what Addy and Max were facing, their relationship played out as I would expect.

I'm intrigued to see what happens next with the humans of Hyborea. A very close 4-stars!
