lcslibrarian | Aug 13, 2020 | Birds are going crazy. Batman, the Flash, and other DC characters have to save the day. Which dastardly DC character could be at fault? This was a fun book, and not a bad easy reader for one with popular characters.

A story that begins with the sorting of children among guilds for lifelong occupations, turns into an all out magically infused war that'll take down as many as painfully as it can along the way. We see much character growth in our young charges, as well as a loss of innocence as their dreams are torn away and they face Dangers great and... well, greater. The subplots running just under the surface of it all serve to add another dimension to the oddities happening, and instill a greater fear for the futures of them all.
In the end, a grand adventure that I can't wait to embark on once again when the next title releases, especially after that harrowing end!

GRgenius | 1 altra recensione | Sep 15, 2019 | My daughters latest addiction - the heroes from the Justice League. They saw these beginning reader books at Target and were instantly smitten. The story is not spectacular. This book shows the heroes dealing with nefarious birds. Yes, just birds. They are going crazy all over the city. While Flash scares away the pigeons, Aquaman splashes seagulls, and Superman and Green Lantern round up ostriches, Batman looks for the real culprit. He finds a machine that is driving the birds wild, and discovers that the Penguin is using it as a distraction while he robs the bank. Batman swoops in, the bad guy goes off to jail, and everyone is happily playing on the beach at the end.
Not only is the story watered down to the point of silliness, the text is stilted. Beginning reader books pull from a limited vocabulary, which I understand, but there are other examples of early level books that utilize natural sounding syntax with the simpler words. Throwing in a harder word now and then, if it is necessary to the story, is not a crime. The balancing factor, for my family, is the subject matter. My daughters love these superheroes. The illustrations are cute and colorful. While I am unimpressed with the writing, the book has so much appeal for my girls that I know we will be reading it many and many a time.½
