This book would be appropriate for 2-4 grade.
This book is about the life of author and storyteller Pure Belpre and the seeds of inspiration she planted in the hearts of children.
I would recommend this book be used as a read aloud or amiable for students to read on their own.

To be honest, I wasn't aware at all about Pura Belpre before this year. She is such an inspiration, not only because she spoke three languages but because she had the courage to share her families stories and create puppet shows for the people in her community. I can't imagine what Libraries would be like without her.

"Planting Stories" is a stunning book, I will just say that right now. Working in the library, I know of Pura Belpre. Every year, an award, named for her, is given to the best Latinx author and illustrator. That being said, I did not know that much about her before I read this picture book. I did not know her story.

It's the story of coming to NYC from Puerto Rico and falling in love with the United States. She carries "seeds" from her homeland of stories, tales, etc. No one knows them in the United States so Pura sets out to share them with children. She does bilingual storytimes. She makes puppets. She shares her love of culture with those who do not know it.

A beautiful thing about this book are the Spanish words and phrases that are intermingled in the text. This is both good and bad. I know....passable....pronunciation so I wouldn't feel like I was butchering the language. However, because there is not a translation guide, you do have to do your best guess at what you are saying.

I think this book is an excellent example of a strong woman who made a difference in the lives of many. She seems like a positive role model!

This book would be good for intermediate grades. It tells the story of Pura Belpre, a woman from Puerto Rico who moves to New York and becomes a storyteller, author, puppeteer, and more. I would definitely use this for a read aloud in my class, I'm not sure if I would keep it in the classroom book rotation, but it is a must read.

In "Planting Stories", it is the colorful life story of Pura Belpre who paved her own way with storytelling. From being a young girl in 1920s Puerto Rico to becoming a fantastic storyteller and librarian, to even getting a literacy award named after her. I would recommend this book to any grade level, as every portion of this book can appeal to any age. The beautiful and vibrant colors can appeal to younger children and her actual life story could be appealing to older children. (If i could give more than 5 stars, I would)

Planting Stories is a sweet book about a woman who emigrates to America to share her childhood stories with the world. It has an abundance of Spanish words in the story, almost full sentences at times, but it creates a connection with our main character. Students can relate to her experiences, and her desire to share her stories could inspire students to read more outside of the classroom, an important task for middle grade teachers. One could read this in an English classroom, again to inspire students to read more or as an introduction to biographies, or could be read in a Spanish or Social Studies classroom about the language and culture of Puerto Rico.½

This book is just wonderful! As a librarian I might have a special place in my heart for books that talk about how wonderful libraries are but this one has so much more to offer. This picture book biography tells about one of the library greats, Pura Belpré, how she came to NY from Puerto Rico, and how she became a beloved storyteller both at a library and as an author. The biography is peppered with Spanish phrases, and there is a full Spanish language version--a wonderful addition to bilingual story times! I also love that this book backs up what I have told to library patrons, if you can't find a book with the story you want, perhaps it's because you need to write it! There is also a great end note with more information.

This is a picture book tells the story of Pura Teresa Belpre, a New York Librarian, born in Puerto Rico. When she first came to New York and started working in the library she notices there are no folktales in the library from her country. So, she starts to tell these stories during a story time for children. She also sews puppets and begins to act out her stories. Eventually she leaves the library for several years and when she comes back, she notices a change, that her stories are still being told to children in the library. The book is written primarily in English but also contains some Spanish words throughout. It has lovely, vibrant illustrations that bring the story to life.

Super Cute!! What do three little bears like to do best of all? Why, go over to Grandma's for the day and cook ooey gooey sweet treats. This is a wonderful, kind and gentle story that is so relatable. I read this story to a group of Head Start students and they absolutely loved it. It has a Grandma who is loving and enjoys sharing her love for both her grandchildren and cooking. Very heartfelt.

This book is the non-fiction biography about the life of Pura Belpré. After coming to America in 1921, Pura began working at the New York Public Library as a bilingual assistant. She told many stories from her homeland-- Puerto Rico-- and eventually turned her stories into books. This book teachers readers the importance and impact of storytelling. While this is a non-fiction book, the story is presented in a meaningful way that engages readers.

This would be a wonderful book for intermediate students. It tells the story of the sweet lady named Pura Belpre who immigrated to the United States from Puerto Rico. Belpre began going to and working at the library by her house, and began to realize that there were very little books written in Spanish. She began working to write and tell stories in Spanish through books and puppet shows and went on to travel sharing her stories. She married a musician and returned to the library, continuing to spread her love of writing and storytelling with others. This book is helpful because it can show students the power of books, and the impact stories can have on a person. I would use this book in a read aloud at the beginning of the year, in order to set the tone of the importance of reading and storytelling in my classroom and inspire students to write their stories like Pura Belpre.

Primary. This book talks about the life of Pura Belpre, the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City, and all the truly amazing things she did for multiculturalism in the U.S. It is a wonderful book to use to teach or to just have in your classroom.

"Planting Stories" is the biography of Pura Belpré, a Puerto Rican woman who moved to New York City in 1921 seeking opportunity. She was hired as a bilingual assistant at a branch of the New York Public Library and began telling Puerto Rican folktales to children. She made puppets to accompany her stories and began traveling to libraries throughout the city, putting on shows. Eventually, Belpré published her stories so that they could appear on the shelves in the library.
I really loved this book. Anika Aldamuy Denise does an excellent job of telling Belpré's story. I appreciate that fragments of the story are written in Spanish. Paola Escobar's illustrations are beautiful and enthralling. I had never heard of Pura Belpré before reading this book and I am very glad to have learned her story. I would highly recommend this book to first through fourth grade teachers.
