Cappadocia, Turkey, has some of the most unique natural geological landscapes in the world, best known for formations that are nicknamed as “fairy chimneys” (admittedly, some look phallic with a painful pointy end). This book is well organized with
1) history of the area, impressively occupied since 3500BC,
2) the geological natural beauties organized by location, with the most famous in Goreme.
3) the many rock churches carved into the rocks as well as the frescoes on the walls, the most famous being the Goreme Open Air Museum, and
4) the impressive underground cities, some more than 10 layers deep, that offered protection to the people and helped spread the beginning of Christianity before it was officially accepted as a religion. The underground cities had a decidedly “Indian Jones” feeling complete with rolling circular trap doors. 36 such cities are known.
This book has quad-fold pages that showcase the stunning landscape. This version is the 2015 printing; the quality of the photos is crisp and text layout is clear. Good souvenir.… (altro)
