Reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe, this is the perfect read for a dark and chilly autumn night. The story starts off innocently enough, but soon descends into darkness and imagery that will send chills running down your spine. I absolutely loved the narrative style, and found myself so engrossed in the story itself that I jumped when a text notification went off on my phone. If you're a fan of the psychological style horror of Poe, but are looking for a fresh new story, then you'll want to grab this. This was such a fun opening book to a promising new YA series. Pen is a great lead character, and I really enjoyed getting to know him and Marley and Niamh. The characters are well fleshed out, and the story moves along pretty smoothly. I loved the whole idea of The Rite and that Pen is thrust into being his uncle's apprentice so unexpectedly. Of course, there are some less-than-good forces working behind the scenes, adding a bit of tension to the story. I don't want to give anything away, so you'll have to grab this if you want to know all about Pen's adventures. Fans of Harry Potter will probably enjoy this fantasy.… (altro)
