No rating because, well, it's a CPR/first aid manual I've read for class. Not exactly something I'd rate, either for its readability or use of language or anything else. Required reading and all that.

A manual covering standard first aid and personal safety. The book can be used in conjunction with American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Personal Safety course, or read alone. The text incorporates information on personal safety and accident prevention, so that people can learn the causes of accidents and act to eliminate or minimize such causes.

A manual to accompany a course in emergency medical help. Used in conjunction with a series of video segments and learning activities, this manual is designed to increase your knowledge and skills. The manual contains all the material one will learn in class, only in a form that is easy to keep and use as reference whenever needed. The manual has highlighted information and material condensed in lists to make it easy to identify the critical points and to refresh ones memory. Photos, drawings, graphs and tables also present information in an easy-to-find form. Skill sheets give step-by-step directions for performing the skills taught in the course. Questinnatires provide a way for the reader to evaluate certain risks in ones lifestyle. The manual also contains articles of varying lengths to cover all the topics taught in class.

Covers prevention, identification of problems, field decision-making, treatment or care, to move or not, etc. Text augmented with photos illustrating procedures. Personal, Group, and Augmented Group First Aid Kit, and using "found" materials. With less than 1 trained person per thousand, in case of emergency, even in a city, fundamental training should be obligatory.

Boy, things have changed a lot since I was first CPR-certified twenty years ago. It seems like now there's less analysis, and more action.

This is the standard textbook for a first aid/CPR/AED certification class taught by the American Red Cross (this is the 2010 book). There's a lot of good information, and the many photographs or illustrations are usually relevant. Most chapters end with helpful "skill sheets" but I think those might be better placed all together, either at the front or end of the book.

(My 1991 versions -- split into separate First Aid and CPR volumes -- of this book were double the size of the current book, as it seems more "accidents" were described and more first aid techniques were explained. I can't really tell if this is "dumbing down" the information or only providing lay responders with the most basic of information which would be more likely to be retained especially in an emergency.)

I am an ARC canoe instructor and have used this book as a resource to assist me in teaching canoeing. It is unfortunate, but this book is no longer available on the open market except through used booksellers.

Pretty much every time I take CPR or First AID I get a new book. This is the first time I have felt like the book might be a useful first aid reference at home or at work/school. It might just be that the instructor was good, and actually referred often to the book, which highlighted it's relevancy. It seems to be well organized and set up with quick reference pages that summarize important points.

I used this book for CPR/First Aid class. Even though I passed I still don't feel like I could save a life.

When I was a kid, I thought the pictures in this book were absolutely fascinating. I cannot say that I ever actually read it though.

Be Prepared, Right? Just as you should have people first aid books and kits on hand if you have pets you should have pet first aid books and kits on hand. This gives good general coverage on what to do in pretty much every emergency and general health situation and when to get the animal to the vet.
