New York is Book Country

This book is a real find. I was looking in the library for another book at Dewey number 810, and found this instead. Now that New York is book Country has in essence ceased happening, this book has become a tribute to this great series of festivals. This book was compiled for its 25th anniversary in 2003. I think it lasted on 5th Avenue for only another years and then moved to Washington Park in the Village for another two years, and kind of ceased. And then we had a New York Times festival of books in Bryant Park for two years, but it is now reduced to a children's book fair at Columbia. In its place, there is a new Brooklyn Book Festival.

Not every story or essay in this volume points to the New York is Book country festival, but all in some way indicate the importance of books. I statrted reading an essay in this book, title "On Reading", but failed to note the author. After 2-3 pages of reading, I said to myself, this if very fine writing -- I wonder if I know the author. So, I turned a few pages back and found that the author was indeed one of my favorites, Gita Mehta.

Finally, this book is a paean to the city of New York, and I appreciate finding it by chance.… (altro)
