Denis Compton's autobiography, read around the time of the centenary of his birth, was written at the tome of his retirement from the game in 1957. Interesting read½

The chief interest for contemporary readers would have been Compton's first-hand account of play in England's unsuccessful ashes tour of 1946–7. The book retains interest today for its historical perspective on the first Australian tour after the Second World War. For example, England's players were still living on rations, and Compton maintains that one of the reasons for Australia's success was their greater nutrition. Compton was not a professional writer, so lapses in his style are forgivable, but journalese and superabundance of phrases in inverted commas spoil the admirable content.½
