Inspirational, fast read. More of a memoir than anything else (and fascinating in the story of the margins regarding how her family suffered for her need to succeed with her students). I received lots of insights into what was going through the minds of my elementary and junior high school teachers as well.

The mix of third and first person was confusing until I realized the book had dual authors, and I didn't find it dated at all. I did find myself disagreeing with the pedagogy in places, especially regarding the focus on classics, but I see a huge number of parallels to the best practices currently in place for working with students, of the Teach Like a Champion sort -- this seems to be an ur-book in many ways.

Quite an interesting historical and modern anecdotal piece, which illustrates most clearly what exactly it means to be both warm and demanding.½

Marva Collins' story will inspire you and make you want to be a better teacher. All children can learn.

“The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another.”

“Don't try to fix the students, fix ourselves first. The good teacher makes the poor student good and the good student superior. When our students fail, we, as teachers, too, have failed.”½
