Cohen's study of leadership across four key countries from the crucial turn of the Twentieth century up through the end of WWII is a must-read book for all who care about democracy. He shows how not only authoritarian regimes but democracies as respected as that of the USA have used the media and other tools to build a discourse in which leaders are a necessary and natural part of the very 'cosmic order' (P. 809).
As the book is long, I recommend starting with P. 564/5, then P. 446, p. 407, 402, p. 197, 154, 118, particular attention to P. 86 and 87, then to P. 78/9, and have a look at his nice Foucaultian argument at the end of P. 821 for continuous pressure for egalitarian structures. After whetting your appetite with those pages, get your notebook out and enjoy!
