Shameless is a magazine for girls who think about more than just catching guys and keeping up with the latest fashion trends. Instead, it discusses politics, careers, activism. Especially interesting is the way it tackles edgy issues—the latest issue contains a section on pap smears for lesbians and transmen. However, the magazine also has some sections that are just fun, such as cooking and crafts. Readers will also see the usual fashion and media columns, but with a “shameless” twist—fashion includes unusual trends such as fishnets and the history behind the trend, while the media includes “counterculture classics” about strong women in older media. Diversity—racially, ethnically, and otherwise—is threaded throughout in such a way as to seem just normal rather than overly overt. These girls are girls first. This magazine promotes independent thinking, creativity, and activism. Though it’s two-toned cover seems bland at first, the content itself is colorful enough to make up for it.… (altro)

Published since 2004, Shameless: For Girls Who Get It is an alternative and award-winning magazine for young women and teen girls. Shameless offers readers heaping doses of well-written social awareness, covering sexual orientation, race, gender identity, immigration issues and treatment, local shopping, crafts, and the politics of eating not only well but just. The winter 2010 issue has articles and columns titled: “Mixing Pop & Politics,” “Sexting Scandals: Who’s to Blame?” and “Body politics: Shame, Beauty and Women of Colour.” Although best suited for the upper age range of YA girls, each individual Shameless offers content accessible to younger as well as older teen girls.
