This is a vitally important contribution to the history both of slavery and the slave trade, and political thought. It renders accessible to the modern reader two important late eighteenth century essays by early abolitionist writers. One, Thomas Clarkson was aptly described by Eric Williams as one of the few true friends of the black race, the other, Quobna Ottobah Cugoano, was one of the first Africans to speak on the subject of slavery and racial equality. It is tremendously important that an American publisher is bringing out these *European* contributions to the fight against slavery and for racial equality as all too often Americans forget that the struggle was fought on the other side of the Atlantic and in the West Indies as well.

Cugoano's contribution is of especial importance as practically the first African attack on the slave trade, and one of the first presentations of a political theory of racial equality in the modern world.

Thomas Clarkson, an ardent advocate of British Abolition details the road to the Act of the Abolition of the Slave Trade that was passed in 1807. The book orginally published in 1808, highlights his involvement and many others- like William Wilberforce, Lord Mansfield, Granville Sharp, Alexander Falconbridge- in one of the most important steps to ending slavery in the British Empire and the world. It chronicles many of his personal discoveries and first hand accounts of the horrors of the slave trade and slavery. Clarkson played a pivotal role in ending slavery in England and anyone who is interested in abolition- in US or UK- will find this book fascinating- hopefully as much as I did.… (altro)

Clarkson (1760-1846) was the leader of the anti-slavery movement in England. He was not a Quaker, but many of those in the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade were.
