The volume focuses heavily on archaeology and anthropology, and outside of a brief chapter discussing Egypt, has little consideration of traditional recorded history. The repeated discussion of the classification of fragmentary stone tools and animal and plant remains becomes tedious. Consideration of the geologic and climactic changes to the African continent is a reminder that the current conditions do not define Africa for the entirety of its existence.½
