Casey Childers

I love to read sequels and ‘what if’ stories fans of Jane Austen write. I love to see how other people in vision her characters and see what direction they take them in. Casey Childers does this in her ‘what if’ story, Twilight of the Abyss. What if Darcy wasn’t such a prick in Hertfordshire? What if they fell in love? What if circumstances still kept them a part? These are the questions that are asked and answered in this story.
Overall I liked the story. It kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The story itself was interesting and entertaining. I like the direction she took it in. Casey also keeps Jane Austen’s characters personalities close to the original. Darcy is brooding. Charles is Charming. Mr. Bennett is Mr. Bennett. However there are a few exceptions. Lizzy is depressed for most of this book. This didn't feel out of place because she has disappointed hopes and dreams and longs for the love that she has lost. Lizzy tries to carry on the best she can. Jane is as sweet as ever but has a little more gumption than the original P & P. I liked that a lot. I imagine as close as Jane and Lizzy were, they would be very protective of each other. The only thing that gave me pause (this is a bit of a spoiler) is Mr. Collins does not marry Charlotte Lucas but Mary Bennett. If I can see anyone else with Mr. Collins it’s Mary. However it left me wondering ‘What’s going to happen with poor Charlotte?’
If you like sequels and what if stories like I do. I recommend this one. You won’t be disappointed.
