- He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Abilene Christian University, and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He was Professor of Communication and held the Carl P. Miller Chair of Communication at Pepperdine University, where he taught for over twenty years. He previously taught at the University of Maine and was a visiting scholar at Baylor University. The author of numerous articles and books, his latest being The Rhetoric of Sir Garfield Todd: Christian Imagination and the Dream of an African Democracy (Waco: Baylor University Press, 2007). He was a member of the University Church of Christ in Malibu, CA; was a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Speech Communication Association, and the International Society for the History of Rhetoric.

Following the comprehensive (65 pages with 297 notes!) Although the book was compiled in 2002 and some of the articles are getting “long in the tooth,” (for example, all of Harrell's essays were written in the 1960s) the book should continue to be beneficial to persons interested in the Stone-Campbell religious heritage for quite sometime. The quality of the research and writing is excellent from start to finish.
I am glad to have this volume in my library and recommend it to serious university and seminary students, and pastors and lay persons, particularly those of the any of the streams of the Stone-Campbell religious heritage. I hope scholars will continue to add their updates to the book's existing topics, and add their thinking to new issues and developments that are emerging as time moves on.… (altro)
