I don't usually like to compare books, but as this bio came out the same year as the only other bio on Shaw-"Robert Shaw:The Price Of Success", it's really hard not to compare. "More Than A Life" does cover new and interesting ground, giving the reader interviews with Shaw's first wife regarding his affair with actress Mary Ure and thorough explorations into Shaw's novels regarding their inspirations and plot structures. This makes sense, as the co-authors were English professors. What doesn't make sense is that the book has so many punctuation and spacing errors ( and has anyone heard of The Beetles?).
I found "The Price of Success" to be a more intimate look at Shaw, and better written. It was written by John French, Shaw and Mary Ure's agent for many years. It spends a lot less time sugar-coating Shaw's personality .… (altro)
