Rhoda Bulter (1929–1994)

Rhoda Bulter, née Johnson, was born in Lerwick in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, a daughter of Jeremiah Johnson, a seaman, and his wife Barbara Huano Thomason. She spent some of her early life in Lunnasting, her mother's hometown. In 1949, she married Dennis Bulter. Her first poem, "Fladdabister," was published in The New Shetlander in 1970, after which she became a prolific writer in the Shetland dialect. She published four volumes of verse in her lifetime. She was also a frequent contributor to the local Radio Shetland and wrote a regular monthly column for Shetland Life magazine.
