Breve biografia
Like most British schoolchildren of the 1950s and 60s I was brought up with comic magazines such as the Beano and every Christmas was spent with the annual cartoon collections by Giles of the Daily Express. However, I also enjoyed war cartoons from an early age - my father had been in the RAF in Burma during the war and brought back Jungle, Jungle, Little Chindit by Jon Musgrave-Wood (later Emmwood, political cartoonist of the Daily Mail) and collections of RAF cartoons featuring Pilot Officer Prune by 'Raff' (Bill Hooper).
My first professional involvement with cartoons was in 1984 when I was working as an editor in book publishing. After editing the biography of David Low, I commissioned biographies of Vicky (Victor Weisz) and Ronald Searle.
Soon afterwards I began compiling anthologies of cartoons, was invited to become the Secretary of the British Cartoonists' Association, organised three English Heritage commemorative blue plaques to cartoonists (Low, Vicky and H.M.Bateman) and wrote two biographical dictionaries of cartoonists and caricaturists. A number of other books on cartoon history followed and I have been writing two pages a month on the subject for History Today magazine for the past five years, have written obituaries on cartoonists for the Independent for the past 10 years and have contributed entries on cartoonists and caricaturists for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and other reference books. I have also lectured widely and curated exhibitions of cartoons.
In 1992 I began Park Art, selling cartoon books by direct mail and to specialist shops, galleries and museums, and the following year was co-founder of the cartoon book publishing company Park McDonald, of which I was also editor-in-chief (1993-96). I have also been a Research Associate for the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent, Research Consultant for the British Cartoon Forum and a consultant for the Cartoonist of the Year category for the British Press Awards.

Born in 1953 in Dorset, graduated philosophy on London University and has a PhD in history from University of Kent. He was working as a writer, publisher and organizer of the exhibitions. From 1992 untill 1999 he was a honorary secretary of British Association of Cartoonists and since 2000 he is a secretary of London Press Club. He wrote several capital books about the cartoon history and had a lot of lectures in Great Britain and abroad. He was a juror of a number of cartoon contests world around and in Zemun was the member of the jury in 2002 and 2004.

A superb selection of the World War II cartoons of Leslie Illingworth, at least those published in the (London) Daily Mail. The editor explains the reasoning behind the selection well (it had to do with available originals in museum archives), and the historical explanations are in the main well done (I did catch a few typos and one strange error where Vidkun Quisling is referred to as Danish). The real treat, though, is Illingworth's brilliant draughtsmanship, on full display here. Definitely recommended for cartoon buffs and WWII buffs alike.… (altro)

Among my favorites are biographies so this book definitely attracted my attention. Laid out in encyclopedic fashion it features a short profile on a hundred or so famous figures from history from all walks of life, most long since passed.

Bryant the author is British so there seems to be a bias toward British authors primarily. Also in the manner some are described in weight as stone, and people are called not named.

Typically biographies focus on the works and deeds of the famous. I am always curious of their habits, quirks, and customs. In this book there is a good measure of that adding the sometimes odd but altogether human characteristics that are most interesting.… (altro)

Um... I believe I could've gone to Project Gutenberg and assembled something at least this good. A real editor should have created a collection, not just assembled a hodge-podge. A few worthies from Jerome K. Jerome and Saki are not enough to support a whole book.
