The third and final issue of Matt Broersma's Insomnia is an interesting end to the series, and interweaves characters from the first two volumes around the languid mystery of "The Company." This time around, Broersma's artwork is a little simpler and sparse, but still well-executed and enjoyable to look at. The story itself is enigmatic and perhaps a little cliched in some of the individual scenarios, but manages to exude a sense of world-weariness that is arch yet entertaining enough.

The second installment of Matt Broersma's Insomnia starts to move in a more interesting direction, as we meet new characters and encounter one old character (Marco Clay, the primary protagonist of the first volume). The story in this volume, entitled "The Lock", is still resident in the same dream-like territory that Broersma explored in the first volume, but this time around, we encounter stories of longing mixed with a bit of regret. Visually, this volume is less complex and more "cartoon-like" than the first volume, and a palpable sense of motion and agitation permeates these panels. The exact point of the intertwining stories remains elusive, but Broersma continues to deliver an intriguing mix of elements that makes the journey worthwhile.… (altro)

While the stories presented in Insomnia 1 are highly enigmatic, there is a wonderful sense of even pacing and a wonderful presentation of dreamy visuals that pull this unusual work together in a way that makes sense, even if the discrete elements of the plot don't. Matt Broersma's thick, imprecise use of watercolor washes to enhance his minimalist pen-work makes for a loose, easy approach to the graphic elements of this story, in perfect keeping with the enjoyably slow pace of the narrative itself.… (altro)
