A fun and educational biography, Abe Lincoln's Hat uses a unique framework to point out many human sides of Lincoln's life that I didn't know previously. Kids will enjoy how he wasn't organized and some of the slice-of-life stories about pranks and hardships of working a traveling circuit. The book addresses his political growth and development on the issues of slavery and managing a divided country in ways that educate without condescending to young readers. It glosses over the Civil War a little too much, even for younger readers, but has great info and picture at the end of the book that partially make up for that. It is a quality addition to a section on Lincoln or the era. Appropriate even for very young readers, good for history, biography, and just as a story.

I enjoyed this book; I learned many things I did not know about Abe Lincoln. Since Lincoln was an American president, I have learned many things about him in history classes. I thought I knew pretty much everything there was to know about the president, but after reading this book I noticed I didn't know everything about his personal life. One fact that I didn't know was that he was a lawyer; I knew he was a prominent figure in the new world, but I never knew he brought so many people justice before his presidency. A fact that I found funny and interesting was that he kept important papers in his hat. Without reading this book, I probably would have never found that out. A major factor in Lincoln's presidency was that he freed slaves, declared equal rights for all, and reunited the union. Without Lincoln, who knows where we would be in todays world. He was and still is such a inspiring person for the American people.

This book was so cute! Abraham Lincoln was a great man, but his hat was even greater. But why did he always wear it? Abe was a forgetfull man so he kept all of his important notes and letters in his hat. Such a cute book that brings character to a man that many students only know surface facts about.

This book is a riveting story about what Abe Lincoln's life was like when he was a lawyer. Though the story depicts him as a great guy with very few faults, they do show how he enjoyed a good joke and show that he liked to help people. The book says Lincoln was against slavery though it does not tell that he once held slaves himself while he was president. This is still a quality story to help young children know that Lincoln was more than just the president of the United States.

This was a pretty good book. I thought it was a creative way to teach young children about a great president who changed life as we know it today. Instead of making his life like a history lesson, it was more of an interesting story. I liked how in almost every page the illustrator included his hat. I learned that Lincoln was an amazing lawyer before he was president. He changed the lives of many good people. For example, he freed a black woman named Nance, from being a slave. From then on, selling people was not allowed inn Illinois. I wasn't a fan of some of the pages that felt just like fillers. For example, there was a whole page dedicated to his horse and how slow it was. This did not really contribute to the story. Overall, it was a good book and a good way to get young students to learn about a man who changed our country for the better.

Summary
This book is very informational about Abe Lincoln. An early look at his career as a lawyer. He told jokes and stories while in court, He helped others when they asked him or wrote him.

Personal Reaction:
I found this book very interesting. I love the personal side of his important papers that were kept in his hat.

Classroom Extension:
1. I would have the students make a hat and write a letter to a family member.
2. I would have a mock trial in the classroom to show how the judicial system works

I enjoyed this book. The characters are very well developed , especially Abe himself. I liked how they gave him a personality and the book wasn't just purely information about him, For example, the book focused on his hat and how he put papers in there so he wouldn't forget them. The book did this in conjunction with giving information about his life and contributions. Another reason I liked the book was for its writing. It was engaging to the reader. For example, particular scene on the book where the children tripped Abe and his papers went flying everywhere set a sad tone for thst point in the story, as it insinuated that Abe would forget everything without his papers. He ended up remembering, but still continued to put papers in his hat. The main point of the story was to inform readers a bout Abe Lincoln's life and how he used his hat to help remember things, This in turn helped him to achieve many goals as president.

This book is filled with so many fun facts about Abe Lincoln. I learned things that I never knew about him before, like he used to keep important letters in his famous hat. This is such a good book to share with students as they learn about Abe Lincoln.

This is a realistic fiction book because it describes a possible setting of a young boy who is having a hard time learning that he should not make messes because eventually the mess will just keep building and it will be harder for you to complete the task. I could use this book in my class to talk about the importance of consistency and that if you fall lazy at times it will be harder for you to complete tasks. Another way I could use this book is to talk about chores and give each students in my class a different responsibility each day so they learn what consistency means. The media in this book is watercolor and acrylic.

Illus. in full color. Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest presidents, started out in life as an absent-minded frontier lawyer. How did he nudge his memory? He stuck letters, court notes, contracts, and even his checkbook in his trademark top hat. When he took off his hat, it was all there!

I liked this book for two reasons. First I liked how the author created a well-developed main character, Abraham Lincoln. The author used real life characteristics about him because he was a lawyer and a president. Not only was this book for entertainment, but it was also an informational book about Abraham Lincoln's life. Second, I liked the illustrations. Sometimes when reading books about the past is not very appealing to young readers, so providing illustrations on every page really entices readers. The idea of this book was to share an entertaining story about Abraham Lincoln.

Great picture book to introduce kids to Abe Lincoln and history. To learn that Abe was in fact poor and a lawyer early in his career. The pictures in this book are greatly illustrated, relating to the words on the pages. Finding out later that his tall black hat was more than a fashion statement that defined Abe’s character. Abe was a very unorganized lawyer, forgetting to reply to mail, always losing papers. So, Abe bought a black hat, “He could push letters deep inside it.” Abe’s hat was tall, purposefully to keep his important documents safe. As the story goes on we learn that Abe told jokes that made everyone laugh, even the judge. This shows Abe’s personality that he was not only a politician, but he had a sense of humor as well. Another great quality that Abe had was that he fought for slavery. Once becoming president in 1860, Abe passed laws that would free all slaves. Even after winning the election for president, Abe still kept his important documents in his hat.
This is a book where we find humor and learn about Abe’s hat. A good group read to engage kids in the book, keeping them guessing what is in the hat.

Summary:
This book is a short biography about Abraham Lincoln. It talks about his younger years when he was a lawyer and worked very hard to help people out. He was very good at resolving problems between people. The one problem he did have was he was very forgetful when it came to responding to letters. He felt the only way to solve this would be to put the letters in his hat. Throughout his travels he decided he wanted to do more, he felt that everyone should be treated equally. He ran for President of the United States and he won. One of his greatest accomplishments being President was that he was able to free the slaves.

Personal Reaction:
I felt this was a very good book for younger children. It was very educational and had some humor in it. The pictures helped to bring the book alive. I read this book to my seven year old daughter and she really enjoyed it.

Classroom Extensions:
1. Have the students make a hat just like Abraham Lincolns'.
2. Have a discussion with the class about the importance of treating people equally.

Summary: Abraham Lincoln's hat was much more than a hat. This book shows the significance of how he used his hat for holding important letters and things so he wouldn't forget about them. It also touches on slavery and how he was elected President of the United States.

Personal Reaction: This is a very good book for introducing history to children. I, personally, had never heard about the significance of his hat. Great book and very well written.

Classroom Extensions: Use black construction paper to make tall black top hats and have them write something important to them inside the hat.
Set up a mock trail and have the kids plead their case about something silly. Appoint two lawyers and a judge and show the how a court operates.

This book is a humorous look at Abraham Lincoln’s stovepipe hat. While this book does touch briefly on the issue of slavery, it is not a book on Lincoln’s role in abolishing slavery. The book is funny and portrays Lincoln as a fun loving young man. His hat sometimes even serves as a file cabinet for all his papers.

Summary: A biography about Abe Lincoln from when he was a lawyer to when he became President. The story told why he kept notes in his hat, and that he helped a lot of people when he was lawyer.

Personal Reflection: A simple story that told a lot about President Lincoln. I didn't know that he grew his beard because someone said it would make look more distinguished as president.

Classroom Extension:
1. Teach memory making ideas, have each student come up with a way that would remind them of something.

2. In History class, to learn quirky facts about famous people.

I believe this was a good book because it was very kid friendly. If this book was read to children, I think that they would understand everything that Abe Lincoln did before he was president. It is strange to know that one of the best presidents started out as a lawyer and worked his way up to president.½

Abe Lincoln's Hat tells the story of his rise to presidency, and of course his famous attire. The book begins with Abe Lincoln buying his hat and goes on to explain how he uses it. Lincoln begins to use his hat to hold letters from people, and from these letters helps people in court. He begins his rise to fame through these court battles, and his stance on slavery. In the end we see Lincoln get elected president. This book shows a presidents rise to fame and incorporates a bit of humor through his attire.

Teaching Ideas: Abe Lincoln, How to be elected president, Slavery

Summary- This book is about Abe Lincoln and his journey in becoming the President of the United States. It tells of different stories about how Mr. Lincoln kept important papers in his top hat and also everything that he has been through with his top hat.

Personal Reaction- I thought this was a very cute book and that it portrayed Abe Lincoln very well. I also thought that it was very informative especially for children who may not know all of Abe Lincoln's qualities as a person.

Classroom extension ideas-
1) Construct a craft so that kids can make and wear a top hat.
2) All write a submission about Abe Lincoln.
