A Children’s Guide to Worship by Ruth L. Boling. Section 6 C: Church Growth, Worship/Symbolism/Families. This wonderful little soft cover story book explains the parts of a worship service for little children, age 3-8. Main sections are “Assemble in God’s Name,” “Proclaim God’s Word,” “Respond to God’s Word,” and, “Go in God’s Name.” Special sections include Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Within these sections the parts of the service are discussed in very basic ways. For example, there are four parts to “Assemble in God’s Name,” the second being “Call to Worship,” in which it says, “We stand and share words that invite us to begin worshiping God.” It is followed by, “Hymn of Praise,” which says, “We stand and sing a joyful song to praise our God. Hooray for God!” Illustrations show a devout little mouse family at worship listening, singing, praying and giving.
When parents share this book over and over with their children, they will naturally have the chance to stop momentarily and ask questions of their children, for example, “what do we do with our hands and eyes when it is time to pray?” The book tells the child to watch what happens during worship: Are we sharing communion today? Will there be a baptism today? Can you tell what season of the church year we are in? What do the banners say? Can you find the first hymn in the hymnal, or the bible reading? What do we do when the offering plate is passed down our row? What children are helping during worship today and what are they doing?
This book also contains a foreword and afterword for parents and Sunday School teachers. We have two copies of this book now, this being the second copy. I also have on the counter in the church library a print-out from another church about how to worship with small children. It discusses how to get ready for worship at home the night before, how to make Sabbath day special not just at church but at home too; and how to teach children about worship so that they are naturally interested in what goes on during worship, rather than just being admonished to sit still or be quiet. This book and the print-outs will help you teach your child about why we go to church and what we do there. If you need more printouts let me know; I only printed out two copies.
