There is no question that we live in an age of weak theology and casual Christianity. We have substituted intuition for truth, feeling for belief and immediate gratification for enduring hope. Evangelicalism desperately needs to return to the doctrines that once before reformed the world: radical depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption, efficacious grace and persevering grace.

James Boice and Philip Ryken not only provide a compelling exposition on these doctrines of grace, but also look briefly at their historical impact. The authors leave no doubt that the church suffers when these foundational truths are neglected and that she must return to a Christianity that is practical-minded, kind-hearted, and most importantly, biblically based.

excelllent book!!!! so much more (and longer) than what i thought it was gonna be.... but covered so much material! what a great way to dig into the life of Moses. covering so much of the Pentateuch, and setting a foundation for all that would come in Christ :) . organized, thorough, and encouraging.

ok... so the first couple of chapters i was greatly encouraged by the details involved in the teaching... great expository teaching!!! and yet still to come were practical implications that took me a little by surprise!! this clear, blunt, and indepth teaching is lacking in "modern" teachers, thinkers, and writers... another reason to stick to good older teachers!

It has verisimilitude, so I’ll try not to wrangle; I’ll just say this: the book is called “The Doctrines of Grace”, and that is good, and it is properly so called for as long as the grace of God is what’s most important. Then, it is a doctrine of God. But if the depravity of “man” (if you will) is most important, then it is more like *the doctrines of depravity*, which is a great misfortune. But, again.

I've studied one or two psalms a week for the past few years using this three-volume series as a resource. It has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the psalms and he has helped bring out many insights I wasn't aware of. usually we agreed.

I have been studying one of the Psalms 3-4 times a week and this book has been very helpful. He helps open up the richness of the Psalms and points out how they related to their original context, as well as how they would relate to us today. I have grown in my enjoyment and appreciation of the Psalms through books such as this.

An insightful guide to the backgrounds and prophe-tic messages of 12 key Old Testament books. It ex-amines the text of Scripture with thorough scholar-ship without losing sight of the spiritual truths & per-sonal applications permeating the prophetic writings.

Paul directed all believers to start thinking (and living) differently from the surrounding culture. This excellent book shows us how to do it. This book ignited in me the concern to develop a christian perspective on everything. I recommend it to every believer.

The original losers--and modern counterparts. Knowing the content of the Bible is not enough. To be all that God intends him to be, a person must see beyond the Book to its Author.

The call from Christ to follow Him is not a request, but a command. From the beginning of the Christian's walk of faith, Jesus must be Lord.

We, too, should be joyful at Christmas not because we give gifts, but because Jesus Christ was joyful as He came to be our Savior

Building programs and youth activities aren't even mentioned. Christ prayed instead for six qualities. Does your church have them?

Television is not a good teaching or informing medium, as most people suppose it is. It is actually a means of largely mindless entertainment. Because it is so pervasive -- the average American household has the television on more than seven hours a day -- it is molding us to think that the chief end of man is to buy things and be entertained. How can people whose minds are filled with brainless babble of the afternoon talk shows or evening sitcoms have anything but trivial thoughts when they come to God's house on Sunday mornings -- if, in fact, they have thoughts of God at all?

The popular pastor/teacher at the Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in the 1950's shares his insights on the familiar Christmas story with this series of sermons. Halos, Hay shepherds and young motherhood can bring tears to the eyes of Christmastime church goers but the message goes beyond this in its sheer power, its reality and its uniqueness in time.
