Amber Boffin

This is the first in a series and was well written. I enjoyed the setting of the cottage country in Canada. I also enjoyed the budding photography business of the main character, Maggie Flanagan. The characters grow on you and there are several that are not very likable. But a few are very likable, especially the animals! There are dogs, llamas and even beavers. The mystery is good and keeps you guessing. Overall, a very good first book!

Maggie Flanagan returns to the small town where she grew up in Ontario, Canada to become a photographer. Leaving her fast-paced job in the UK, she makes new friends and reconnects with others from her childhood. Before she really settles into the peaceful lifestyle of the rural village, she becomes involved in the small-town environmental politics of the area. And discovers first one, then another dead body. Are the murders related? There are several suspects, and the local inept police sergeant even suspects Maggie. She feels compelled to find the real killer(s) and clear her reputation. Along the way to collecting clues she acquires two lovable rescue dogs and a prospective boyfriend.

The characters are varied and a handful are realistically likable, especially Maggie. She is clever yet not overly confident, as she figures out who the murderer is. The author provides clues for the reader, but I didn't put them together so was as surprised as the villagers when Maggie reveals how the victims were murdered and by whom.

This was a pleasant, stress-free read. I look forward to seeing how some of the relationships will develop, as this is the first in a series. It's a good start and I anticipate reading book #2.The author sent me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.… (altro)
