A very short but interesting introduction to St Francis, written by a Franciscan Friar. Made me look for more written by Bodo, and for more about St Francis.

In rewriting this book to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Clare's birth in 1193, Bodo incorporated new insights about Clare that he hopes broaden and deepen the image of St. Clare. He writes, "These new insights have revealed themselves to me only slowly as I came to know St. Clare more intimately through prayer and study and through dialogue with those living of her Rule of Life make St. Clare a real, dynamic presence today."

This is the way of life St. Francis shows us. It asks that we look again at the possibilities within us and around us and see Francis's life and examples as a way of embracing our "dark side," of reconciling the opposites in ourselves and the world. Pilgrims in Assisi by Murray Bodo, OFM and Susan Saint Sing. Originally published in 1996 this is a wonderfully written book that takes you to the hills of Assisi and beyond. Your directors for this retreat are Francis and Clare, contemporaries who were determined to follow the Christ who spoke to them from the cross of San Damiano and to rebuild the church by living the Gospel of Jesus.

This book on Francis, although good, was quite predictable. His life was presented in very flowery language that is typical of books written about him. I would consider it a great introduction to the Saint, but for anyone searching to learn something new about Francis, you might want to search elsewhere.

This little book is a treasure trove of the sayings and life of Father Francis. There is a reading for everyday of the year. It is a wonderful way to keep in daily touch with such a holy person.
