Well this has certainly inspired me to get on and start writing. There is lots of excellent advice here and plenty of exercises to get you started. And the key thing is just to get started. A lot of the exercises actually look pretty same year but that’s no bad thing if the aim is just to get you writing. Now to get going....

Writing Your Family History – A Good Guide

Gill Blanchard has produced a book that will help all those who wish to record their family history, from the family tree, to what happened within that family. Most people who want to do this have a number of motivations, personal interest, wanting to share their knowledge within the family, and wanting to share their history with a wider audience.

This book is a practical step-by-step guide to writing a family history and is for all those that want to bring that history to life. There are always problems when you decide to write history of any sort, and this is applicable to family history. Gill Blanchard tackles this with clarity, as she describes ways in which you can overcome these problems.

Like all good teaching guides, there are exercises for the reader to try, and are key to this book. There are many forms for family history and this book covers all those to make it easier for a person to select the appropriate choice for them. This book also lays out the choices someone will face if they wish to publish their history in many different forms.

Two of the most important chapters, in my opinion, are, when to stop researching and how to develop your writing skills. As someone with a history degree, even I have to remember sometimes that there needs to be a cut off with my research otherwise I will end up with too much information, most of which is irrelevant and take time away from focusing on my subject. We all need to develop our writing skills and that chapter gives some excellent advice, which I too, shall be taking.

A really handy guide, something I too shall be referring too.
