James and Mark live their life in secret, each having a job that doesn’t allow them to be openly gay. The occasional "illicit" encounters they enjoy are all they have together, and when they do manage to meet up, they make the most of it. With a nice touch of mystery around what is going on, this story describes one of their final encounters before they can come out and be together forever.

James is a school teacher who hates his boring life away from Mark. But he knows they have no choice and deals with the separations as best he can. When they do get together, he wants to spend all his time in Mark's arms and when, during what sounds like one of their last encounters before they can retire early and be together 24/7, Mark suddenly behaves differently, James has a hard time accepting that. He is careful and wants nothing to come between him and spending the rest of their lives together. However, he also secretly admires Mark's occasional recklessness.

Mark's reason for hiding their relationship doesn't become clear until later in the book, but it is an understandable one. It also explains why he may be a little more reckless and impatient. His need to suddenly show James off, and be very public in his displays of affection is a bit surprising, and definitely risky, but I think it adds some good tension to the touch of mystery in the book.

With a pronounced touch of sweet and lots of passion, this is a fun story. Nothing too heavy, but a very emotional description of their situation and the long separations they have to endure. If you like stories full of longing, if you enjoy reading about lovers in hiding from a bigoted world, and if you're looking for a read that is as as sweet as it is sexy, then you will probably enjoy this short story.

Hearts On Fire Review

4.25 HEARTS--I think socially awkward or self doubting heroes are my new fave.

You know the types, the one who needs more time to get out of their shell. Some might say why bother but the end results for having to work for it can be very satisfying. It is for me, anyway.

A simple enough opposites attract story that became a little deeper as it progressed set in Scotland, "The Bucket List" is a story about accountant Kade Doherty. Kade has been dumped by his lover of nearly eight years and business partner (Niall, I spit on his name) quite rudely. I will get back to that bastard soon. Kade is devastated, his mind-numbingly staid world has been knocked for six and a half. And he seeks comfort from his friends and you know what they do? Be a true friend and let him know (gently) he kinda is boring. They come up with a bucket list and send Douglas on his merry way.

On his first assignment, he meets hot Aussie, Blake. Oh Blake...I am enchanted with him. I love characters like him, the knight in the shining armor or Blake's case, a knight in shorts in the middle of frigging winter. Blake reminds Kade of who he used to be.

No insta-love either. What a treat. I'm not a hater of insta-love (I'll gripe about it but if written well, I won't even notice) but what I thoroughly enjoyed about the story was the lack of 'I love you'. Because you can't go from being in a relationship of being bossed around for YEARS until you don't recognize who the hell you are anymore and fall in love in a week. You will have hang ups and issues that good dick can't solve. (Blake's got a nice one though BTW)

And this is why I am enchanted.

Give me a decent enough main character with hang up and issues that don't magically vanish when the new guy steps in, bring me into his head while he still figures it out and throw a knight in there, and I'm sold.

Kade was a victim and didn't even know it. His methods are more like an ostrich with his head in the sand but it was him and I totally understood his character. And Blake? He's good stuff. I loved his personality, the way he understood Kade and never belittled him and was patient. And what he does for Kade in the end? MEGA SCORE!

Niall, Kade's crappy ass ex is the lowest form of scum. What is lower than scum? Whatever that is, he's that. His verbal abuse and poor attitude...*waves middle fingers* Controlling jerk. I can't stand people like him. He'll get his in the long run.

Enough about that speck of crap, let's go back to smexy couple, Kade and Blake. They had some memorable smutty scenes. Hint: there might be a tree blushing in the woods somewhere near a loch.

Great writing, enjoyable story and characters. I like how things ended, felt the length was sufficient and got a grasp of the characters. I don't need a follow up (wouldn't say no if there is) or an epilogue. It ends with a solid promise. Once again, I enjoy Douglas Black's work. I definitely will read more from him. I enjoy the way he shuffles his words. :) "

3.5 stars but I'll round up

Short, sweet, sassy and smexy with a plot twist! Lovers putting their real life on hold to meet secretly for two days of hot sex in a far away hotel. They've been doing this for years. And the sex keeps getting better.

Plus they got romantical! Nothing says I Love You like proposing to your boo with a butt plug. True love in effect when ass toys are involved. Loved the couple especially Mark. I'd like to take a nibble but he's forever James' man.

And I'm cool with that.

Fun times had with this one! Hot number.

Nom nom nom.

--When I see a new Douglas Black, I barely read the blurbs in my excitement before adding it to my TBR pile. I know that simple yet complex characters and intense situations are on menu.

With the Scottish Highlands as the main setting, "Taste in Men" is an sexual tension filled story about Taylor, an IT employee who is one foot out of the door at his company and Charles, the older silverfox head of the company. Taylor worked for the company since he was eighteen and all the hard work finally paid off with a big lucrative deal. He can finally leave the company where his technology skills were under appreciated. Down to his final two weeks at Webb, sadly, Taylor has to participate in a company team building weekend in the Scottish wilderness.

At 24 years old and carrying the baggage of a crappy childhood, Taylor is closed off, private and likes it that way. Imagine his surprise, when he feels an instant attraction to a man who doesn't fit his type of: barely legal, blonde and in the twink category. Charles is taller, older and broader than Taylor and he can't keep his eyes off the man. The sexual tension was delicious to read, I didn't expect any less from the author.

But I must say, this book isn't going to be for every reader. I think readers who don't mind contrary characters could give this a chance.

Taylor...he's interesting. I actually think Taylor has mental health concerns and undiagnosed disorders. He's antisocial but there more's to just being antisocial when it comes to Taylor. He's compulsive in his need to "not be tied down", to the point of touching slightly neurotic. And possibly on the spectrum with some of his habits displayed. He's so adamant about not being tied down, he won't buy the simplest things, though he has the coins to back it up. And his word vomit, some times it could grates the nerves.

It's perplexing at points. And Charles gets overshadowed with his baggage (loss of family) by Taylor's...uniqueness. He might be odd for some people, but there's something about his damage that made it an interesting read. I do wish it wasn't a singular POV (Taylor's). I think Charles was an equally interesting character if given a chance. His addition could be seen as telling since the reader misses out on his experience since meeting Taylor.

While the story has tension filled undertone, it wasn't saturated with abundant sex. There was outdoor sex! And a few thwarted occurrences just when the sexy times was imminent. You could just feel those blue balls for the men.

But with some good things, there were parts that weren't as solid.

Things not as strong:

There were weird loose ends, like Ray - was he interested or not? What's his deal? At times he seemed jealous, other supportive. And then as we got to the end, he just disappeared.

The epilogue was cool until the final paragraph (okay maybe 3-4 paragraphs) It was a weird spot. The growth great, but the dialogue got a little wonky. Something was a little off with the HEA feeling.

And the biggest one for me was missing out on the personal growth from Taylor. I wish there was more chances to read the interim parts of him trying to become a functioning adult with the one thing he didn't like, before skipping ahead in time.

Other than those things, the story is readable. Sexy, a little sad in parts, a little funny in others, a quick romance that I think would last. Just wish there was more elaboration in the less stronger bits.

Not my favorite for Douglas Black, "Port in a Storm", but not bad at all.

Recommended for readers who like age gaps, characters who don't emote out loud very well and sexy times outdoors.
