A good look at the battle of New Market from the Emerging Civil War series. As with most of the series, these books are relatively small and easy to read. Included are several valuable Hal Jespersen maps as well as a driving tour. The driving tour helps emphasize the role that the hills, valleys and water courses had during the engagement. The contrasting leadership styles of Breckinridge and Sigel and their roles in the outcome play an important role in the narrative. Ineffectiveness of the cavalry on both sides impacted both the battle and the subsequent retreat. The role of the young VMI cadets around the Bushong Farm of course features prominently.
