A Heart of Wisdom edited by Susan Berrin discussed from a Jewish perspective the journey from midlife through the elder years. The beginning of the book examined the sacred scriptures of Judaism in the Torah and Talmud. Noteworthy was the emphasis of the various stages of life, meaning, and application to the Jewish community.
Included were essays on midlife, intergenerational relationships, women and aging, journeys and discoveries, and meeting the challenges of aging among others. But the central themes taught Jews to acknowledge their responsibilities towards the elderly, how to honor them, and provide for their well-being by being sensitive to their special needs.
A later chapter on “ceremonies” puts Jewish worship in perspective, recognition was given to the wisdom of elders, the benefits of each stage of life, showing why the elderly should be honored in rites, and providing insights on dealing with end-of-life matters.
