Not as light as one would like for field work, but hard to beat this non-specialist's packed guide for bird and reptile identification purposes.

This is a beautiful book that will surely prove to be a great reference. It covers hundreds of birds that live or breed in North America (as well as Hawaii). Each entry includes a clear illustration with a brief description of the bird, its habitat, its habits, and its song. Each bird is assigned a number, which the reader can enter into the keypad on the side of the book to hear the bird's song. The recordings are clear, the information is concise, and the entire package is very attractive (if heavy). I appreciate this tool for putting together the bird with its song, since I don't always hear our local birds at the same time I'm seeing them, and I often hear wonderful songs without knowing who belongs to the voices.

This book originally retailed for well over $100 but I was excited to find it in the bargain section of my local Barnes & Noble for less than $25 (my bargain of the week!). I highly recommend this for bird lovers or simply backyard bird watchers.

Discover two hundred of the world's most spectacular birds in Bird Songs from Around the World, the follow-up to the national best-seller Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song. Drawing from the collection of the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, this stunning book features a sleek, built-in digital audio player that showcases each bird's song, as well as illustrated portraits and brief descriptions emphasizing the exceptional vocalizations. From the brilliantly plumed Lilac-breasted Roller in Africa to the flamboyant North American Roseate Spoonbill to Asia's Red Avadavat, Bird Songs from Around the World combines approachable information, beautiful art, and high-quality sound in a distinctive, elegant package.

When I saw this in BJs, I couldn't stop pressing the buttons and listening to all the different birds. I discovered so many bird calls that I'd known but never known who was saying them, and could finally connect the two. I also discovered that for the few birds I did know the calls to to begin with, this was a good match up (though I would have chosen differently for catbird and bluejay). It also works a bit as a bird book, with a large illustration of each bird and information. If you've got a feeder or birds around, I'd definitely recommend it.½
