Good that there's at least one children's book about Noether. Too bad it's so doctrinaire. In the end, she arrives at Bryn Mawr and dies; the illustration is of the main library on campus.½

This is the true story of Emmy Noether who helped make Einstein’s theory of relativity the solid indestructible physics principle it is today. Emmy was a mathematician in a time when women were not allowed to be educated, let alone allowed to teach. Because of this, she did great things for science, but most of the credit for her work was taken by others. The men were allowed to publish and be famous. This is an interesting biography, but it is a tad long. It is also a bit confusing for the age it’s written. Overall, it is a nice work and introduces children to someone they not heard about before, and for that it was a nice read.

I love non-fiction picture books, and lucky for me Helaine Becker has crafted a great one about a very talented lady!

Emmy Noether was a mathematician, and it seems barely anyone has heard about her. As a smart, Jewish lady she didn't become all that popular (mostly due to the times). Despite this fact, this lady managed to solve some of the mysteries of physics (which is just insanely cool, let's be honest!). She created two important theories that changed math and physics, yet barely anyone knows about her.

I think Grade 3 and up would appreciate this book. Middle schoolers would probably find this far more interesting, but young, advanced readers could also love this. It's educational, has a cool story and is just fun! It could be a great bed time read or for reading buddies! I highly recommend it!

The illustrations have a unique vibe to them and give the book personality. The pictures don't always have a background and cover white spaces where the words aren't. I really liked it, because it stood out to me compared to other books.

Five out of five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Have you ever found rocks that look like bones, plants or shells? These are called fossils. Wendy Sloboda loved finding fossils. Find out what types of fossils she found and how she became the famous “Fossil Whisperer.”
The authors use full color illustrations and narrative text to tell the biographical story of Wendy Sloboda. Readers who like fossils, dinosaurs or reading about famous women will enjoy this picture book biography. The author provides timelines, foldouts and a glossary to provide extra information. This could be used as an elementary age read aloud or a resource for an early research project.

This book is about a very smart fantastic little girl who went on to help NASA as an adult with her science and math knowledge. This book is to be used in the classroom to help give an example of a future job students could have if they love math and science. But this book could also be used when teaching about space.

This Helaine Becker book was my elementary school classes’ second choice of the five books that I am reviewing. It is a very bright, colorful picture book with a page that folds out to reveal what the badlands in Alberta looked like when it was a western interior seaway approximately 80 million years ago. This nonfiction tells the story of Wendy Sloboda, a world-renowned paleontology technician. She even has a dinosaur named after her. The book includes information about Wendy, how to be a fossil hunter, Wendy’s fossil discoveries, including a timeline, Alberta’s amazing bone beds, how fossils are formed, and the Wendiceratops of which a reconstructed skeleton can be seen at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. It also includes a glossary and a list of related books and websites. After hearing this story, students and adults have things to share and are motivated to borrow books about dinosaurs. I recommend this book for grade two and up.

"Zany" illustrations accompany an alphabet of comparatives and superlatives (e.g. brave, braver, bravest).

This book is a biography of Katherine Johnson and how she landed her role as one of the most influential African American woman in space science. It tells her story of how she started out in her younger ages and how she had to overcome barriers to accomplish her dreams. Eventually she over came those barriers and helped safely land the astronauts back home, which is Apollo 23. She used her wise math skills with all of this. This book is very beautiful written for a children’s book and many great illustrations to go along with. I would use this book as a read aloud in my classroom to teach students that they can accomplish anything, even with many barriers they may cross. At the end of the book it does show a page of math equations that I can use as a group assignment of what does that exactly mean. It can also be used across other content areas such as science and social studies.

In "Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13", we are on a wild journey with a african-american mathematician who worked for NASA. We have all heard of the Apollo 13, but did you ever know about the mathematical genius who made sure that that mission returned home? Katherine as a young child loved to count, she seemed to counted evreything in her path. From Katherine's younger years, she was a overall gifted students and later on that lead her to some huge heroic accomplishments. After introducing this picture book to the class, they will soon be able to pick up some history about a science topic as well as learning the concept on counting a variety of items, and as well as learning about a groundbreaking woman along the way. They can also contuine to watch the film "Hidden Figures".½

The publisher's blurb is so much better that the usual! The planning of the material shows great understanding of how to gain interest and provide information useful to a reader of any age. The illustrations are simplified but elegant and provide the perfect vehicle for the material. I recommend this book for people from 7-97 and should be in everyone's local library.
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Kids Can Press via NetGalley. Thank you!

This picture book tells the story of Katherine Johnson and how she landed a job at NASA as a mathematician to help the Apollo 13 mission during the Space Race. This story illustrates math as she solves the math to make sure that Apollo mission goes smoothly, and because of that she makes a historical impact on U.S Spacecraft advancement. This story could be used in science, math, and history classrooms to show how these content areas are prevalent in our day to day lives!

This is an inspiring book written by Helaine Becker about the mathematical wiz, Katherine Johnson. Becker does a wonderful job of highlighting events from Katherine's life that helped to shape her and lead her to NASA. I think students would be fascinated to learn about how Katherine skipped grades and had very impressive mathematical abilities. It is also inspiring to learn how she didn't give up even when things got tough. I also think many students enjoy learning about space and this would be a fun story to read and get them to think about how they could go to space themselves one day! I like the reoccurring "you can count on me" that Katherine says to those asking her to continue to work hard. It is a great example of perseverance!

Katherine Johnson was a bright student - so bright, she skipped three grades (past her brother) and was ready for high school by age ten. However, in the family's West Virginia town, there wasn't a high school for Black students, so they moved one town over so Katherine could continue her education. She became a school teacher, then joined NASA and worked on Apollo 11, 12, and 13. Her swift, accurate calculations helped Apollo 13 "slingshot" around the moon and return safely to Earth.

This book gives a quick biography of Katherine Johnson's life, and then goes to tell the story of her work with NACA and how she saved Apollo. There were several things I loved about this book. One, it takes the complex world of engineering and mathematics and makes it easy to understand. Two, it mentions the impact segregation had on Katherine, and could foster great discussions about the societal barriers that many black women faced in the 70s and still face today. Three, it gives the reader information about the space race. I would highly recommend this book.

This is the story of Katherine Johnson and her journey to become a mathematician. After working as an elementary teacher for several years, Katherine was eventually able to get a job through NACA as a mathematician. Katherine Johnson played a major roll in the Apollo 13 mission and getting the astronauts home. I give this book 5-stars because it shows young girls that they can do anything they set their mind.

The Pirate Queen, who was a real person but about whom there is little information, was born around 1775, kidnapped(?) by pirate Zheng Yi, and took over for him when he died in 1807. She commanded a pirate fleet for many years, and retired/surrendered to the emperor on her own terms.
